Kentucky Burley, 1 lb

Rating: 4.7 out of 5

Back by request. A staple in most cigarette and pipe blends, but it requires significant preparation to mellow its flavor. Use raw Burley as a “condiment” tobacco at 5–10% in blends.

Description

Burley is back by request. This leaf is a major component in most cigarette and pipe tobacco blends, prized for its body and ability to absorb flavor. However, it requires extensive preparation—such as aging, casing, and fermenting—to reduce harshness and make it palatable on its own.

If you’re not ready for the full prep process, you can still incorporate raw Burley in small amounts. Try blending 5–10% into your existing mixes to add strength and depth without overpowering the flavor.

I usually get red burley tips but they didn't have any so I got this Kentucky burley instead. Nice large whole leaves, very easy to strip. The colour is almost of a caramel brown and smells quite nice. I use 40% Burley with 20% lemon, 20% first priming and 20% dark fire, I'm sure this burley will do the trick. It's thinner leaf vs the red burley tips so will burn well. I won't smoke it for awhile as I let it sit for a few months but I'm not worried as it has all the characteristics of a good leaf.

At the time of writing, this particular crop has had a few years to age, and it tells. Excellent quality, large leaves and good case for shredding out of the bag, but let sit and dry a bit before trying to smoke. Wonderful, deep and chocolate nutty aromas. I haven't tried toasting or processing it yet, but it does have a tendency to overpower a blend rather rapidly, and change the overall profile of the smoke which tends to linger and have more aftertaste than VA or Turkish types. If using for cigarette blends, I'd suggest starting at no more than 5% and going from there.

The name “Burley” is very common in types of tobacco,
but for some reason, the taste is not present or defined,
it is difficult for me to know
But it add something to the mix
for me personally the taste reminds me a bit "Nutmeg"
whether to recommend or not in doubt,
maybe there are other “Burley” styles,
but this one is not defined/present for me.
