Cheers BarG,

Have to fight of the bugs first I think. Have put down slug pallets but still getting a hammering - think I might have to try a product here called Derris dust from memory

I've heard that slugs like beer placed in a shallow dish.:D and they hate salt. A lot of members on the forum use slug pellets and swear by them Kaneo. Try an advanced search and to single out the specific posts referring to slug control.

You'll also need to clear away nearby rocks and scrap wood, etc., beneath which the slugs shelter during the day. Then they have to travel farther to reach the tobacco, and are more exposed to the predators that eat slugs.

Slug pellets take about a week to work. I've sprinkled them at 1 week intervals for 3 weeks.

There was alot of rubbish and some old raised gradens in this area but I've cleared all that away, I've put down plenty of slug pallets and also derris dust that controlls caterpillars, leaf hopper and aphids - active ingredient is 5g/kg of Rotenone. My baccy plot is looking like a chemical dump

I've noticed 2 x plants that have had there stems cut of at ground level so I'm think I have cut worms as well - everything seems to want to eat the baccy

I've just thought about Stogies post a bit more and have found slugs, earwigs and other worms under the temporary path I had up the middle of my main bacy plot.

That has now been removed,

Thanks Stogie

Interesting. I wonder if the black non-woven fabric I use to keep the weeds down is protecting the same kind of critters. That do you think guys?

Where you found the stems cut at ground level try digging down a couple inches around root system. sometimes you can find the cut worm and replant in same spot. Here they are a short fat brown looking worm.

The second link has a lot of useful information and very good images for identifying pests and diseases related to tobacco.

Hey yas,

I've added a few pics to show how the plants are progressing, they were hit hard early on with insects / slugs and cold weather

A better pic of the yard layout, Con Shade and Havana to the right,

Last count was 120 plants.

45 x Vir Gold
21 x Con Broad
27 x Con Shade
27 x Havana

Seems a bit random now.

I would have liked to grow out some other cigar varietys, though I have learned alot so far and theres always next season

Ha Kaneo it would be good to see a photo of the same area in 12 weeks time. I was surprised how fast they grew and big they got. I hope the weather stays good for you this year.

I really like the aquarium seed starting thing. I might have to rip that idea off. And I like your yard.

I'm interested to see how wrapper leaves do in 5 gallon buckets. I'm considering growing some next year in buckets. I grew a Virginia Bright Leaf in a bucket this time and noticed the leaves were much smaller than the ones in the ground. But it did mature much much faster and had quicker growth in the beginning, before it got root bound. Also, the leaf seemed to get mis-shaped as it got riper, whereas the ones in the ground didn't. That was fine for my Vrigina, but am curious how it would affect wrapper leaves.

New Zealand looks nice.

hey Andrewislord,

Your welcome to the aquarium idea - my seedlings had a real good germination rate and thrived on the humidity - they were not kept in the dark and had full sun most days with the florescent lights as well. - seedlings came through in four to five days and I just kept misting them morning and night.

I'm not sure how the Ct Shade will go in the buckets - I just got short on growing space but as I have 15 other Ct Shade in a nice shaded area I can use those in blend elsewhere if needed - trial and error :)

New Zealand is a good place - plenty of good people - accessible free hunting year round in state forests and awesome fishing / diving along the coastline
