the Italian made machines aren't any better than Chinese - probably get there gears from China.
I found they work best in low to medium case leaf.

Chicken, do you have any more detailed photos of the shred? From what I can see what you are getting is not exactly what I am looking for. I need it as close to store bought as possible. I have 5 smokers here and not all of them are as adaptable as I am. They have all learned to roll the store bought RYO tobacco, but some of them only barely.

Daniel....
I've tried the brick & slice, blenders, meat grinder, paper cutter, and paper shredders - none of these will get you close to the RYO cut, unless you take a lot of TLC with each cut.
The best I've found is the pasta machines, if you have the leaf in proper case. I use the 'angel hair' attachment first, get long strings, then feed it through any courser attachment for the 2nd pass. Comes out very close to RYO.
Gears last longer if you don't overload the machine. My leaf is medium case on the 1st pass, and low case on the 2nd.

What size shred does it make ?
One thing I do like about paper shredders is that the leaves go through it fast
and will pull them out of your hand.

Lefty, The best shred I have seen is with the pasta maker. I am hoping to find a replacement for those cheap gears. a powered pasta maker would be even better. My wife has a Kitchen Aid so I am thinking about one of those. if it has cheap gears I will just leave it for her to make pasta with.

Cutting tobacco with a paper shredder; genious!! I will have to think about that one. Definately better than using a knife or scissors; like I have seen elsewhere.

With one of these machines, you could start a tobacco shredding collective. Everyone will ship their tobacco to you, you shred, charge a fee...I think we would pay $1.50 to $2.00 /pound easily, then ship it back to us. A new business venture? Great machine!

Freakin' Germans...they think they know everything.

The hopper is overly ambitious (obviously), so reduce the maiming aspect, an elongated, reduced access funneling feed feature would be highly advisable...just enough of one so you couldn't feed your fingers into the shredder, but I like the design.
