Don't cook your eyeballs. If you don't have eclipse glasses, just find an area of dappled shade beneath a leafy tree, and look at the ground. There you will see the dancing projections of scores of tiny "pinhole" cameras, created by the gaps between leaves.

From today—a poor photograph, but the best I could get with the sun playing hide and seek behind the clouds.

Each time I hiked out to the black, asphalt road, the sun would vanish.

When I was a kid we poked a hole in a paper plate to do the same. We tried the box method where you poke a hole on one side and hold it so the dot would shine on the opposite side inside the box, you put the box over your head almost like a hat. The lack of light getting inside the box makes it a little easier to see the projection but you'll look like a weirdo holding a box like you can't decide if you want it on your head or not if you're worried about what others think. Most of us are probably well past the age of giving a **** about that though
