This letter-size book is a honker! The spine is ¾" thick. (Use your legs when lifting it.) Where available, each variety includes descriptions of its origin, historical use, days to maturity, plant spacing, plant height, leaf length and width, useable leaf count, nicotine, yield, and ARS-GRIN references. It also provides guidance on usage and suitable curing methods. I have made no attempt to speculate on subjective considerations, such as flavors and aromas.
This volume presents the reader with 275 named varieties of tobacco, along with photos and descriptions. It represents less than 10% of the named tobacco varieties. But 275 is a lot to choose from. Included in these pages are available representatives of each of the USDA market classes of Nicotiana tabacum: flue-cured, burley, Maryland, cigar wrapper, cigar binder, cigar filler, dark air-cured, dark fire-cured, Hungarian, Oriental and primitives. It also includes examples of Nicotiana rustica and ornamental varieties. These 275 entries exceed the number of tobacco varieties grown by most tobacco growers in an entire lifetime. This book is a portion of the material that I had regretted being unable to include in Grow Your Own Cigars. The seed for nearly every one of the included varieties is available from legitimate seed vendors.
Random page.
Most of the included information is available already, but it is scattered into many nooks and crannies of the Internet, and tedious to locate, even for experienced searchers.
