I am going to begin logging in detail (the best I can) the different recipes I try for loose-leaf chewing tobacco (like Red Man, Beechnut, etc.). I will post my opinions of the final product. I have gained most of the recipes from the PDF smokeless tobacco book I found on here. DISCLAIMER: I am at no point a pro, I am a novice. So please, everything I post and share is a learning experience and I may have done something wrong. Feel free to offer advice and recommendations.





09/16/25. The first recipe I tried. Do note this was a little trial and error. The first one had too much juice used and burnt the juice, the second had way too much salt (made me gag). This is the third. Spoiler alert: I did not find it to be great. It does not taste like Red Man or any store-bought chew I have ever tried. The ratios for this recipe I have posted will provide you a decent size to sample. It is not bad, a bit sour and tart, but I felt like it is good enough to post my experience.

To prep:
  • ¼ cup prune juice
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ tsp food-grade glycerin
  • 5 slightly moist, stripped, and cut large tobacco leaves for this ratio

Process
  1. Warm prune juice in a small saucepan on low heat.
  2. Stir in molasses and brown sugar until dissolved.
  3. Simmer gently 5–7 minutes until it thickens slightly. Don’t boil hard.
  4. Remove from heat, let cool for a few minutes (2–3).
  5. Stir in glycerin.
  6. Let it cool completely before applying to tobacco.
  7. Drop in your cut-up tobacco into the pan and begin mixing and applying the syrup as evenly as possible.

I place it in Ziplock bags, and then store them in the fridge. When I start the day, I drink a cup of coffee (or two) and place a Ziplock bag of my chew into an old pipe tobacco pouch to carry around (mostly for looks). It is not a bad recipe. It does taste very much like prune juice and is a bit tart/sour. I will post the next recipe I try. I am going through a recipe book I found on the forums here. Please, please give any recommendations.

Without the chemical preservatives that large corporations use, this chew won’t last on the shelves. I am going to try to make a chew with a spiced rum in it and plan to experiment with natural preservatives that are not so controversial. I will log and update the shelf life of each recipe to properly notate the affect the ingredients have on the overall finished product moving forward.

Overall this chew is a solid 7/10
