Interesting they way they put paper between the rows.
Also notice that the shade leaf is not tied to the canopy. We've had some discussions here about that. My shade leaf never tips over and I find it hard to believe that from a production/money standpoint that industry ties their shade leaf tobacco. Maybe some growers do, or maybe they used to do it that way in the olden days?

Chicken,
The rubber will degrade and stick to the leaf and stems. If you don't want to just fold a well-cased, scrappy leaf along the stem and do the tying (start with the tip end of the tying leaf and wrap away from the butt end of the hand, then tuck the heavy stem of the tying leaf between halves of the hand), then I would suggest heavy cotton twine that will be easily visible.

John, If you mean he ties his tobacco, see if you can get a few pictures. I'd like to see how they do it.

I generally don't get up there during that part of the season. I do know the technique but so far am clumsy at it. I did it last year for about 20 plants and it worked fine.

As for "How" here goes:

The same framing setup that holds the shade cloth also carries support wires (#10 steel wire) directly over each row. The tier has a plastic bottle (1 gallon size) rigged to a belt around his waist that has a hole cut in it so a 2 pound cone of cotton twine fits in it. The string comes up and out the neck of the bottle He ties a loose knot (NOT a slip knot) around the base of the stalk. The string is then tied off the the wire directly above the plant. The string is wrapped around the plant kind of like a spiral staircase. maybe two turns at first. As the plant grows additional turns are wrapped as necessary. I have not found out how to tie either the bottom or top knots yet but hope to this weekend. (I learned the "Miller's knot" at age 10 working in the grist mill. I ought to be able to figure this out.) They are planting this weekend or Monday. I saw it last year for the first time and forgot my camera. I won't forget this year. When I find out "how to" I'll try to explain it in another post. I'll also post a pic or video of the planting operation. The machine is 50 years old but still works fine If I remember rightly it plants 5 rows at a time and is tractor drawn.I also hope to get a couple of dozen seedling for this years crop. Mine did not do well. They are still tiny.

John

Definitely take your camera when you go.
The video you posted is "mostly" about Broadleaf but there is quite a bit of footage showing Shade leaf too
