I smoke my pipe a lot. Meaning 15 or more bowls a day. At about the halfway point sometimes sooner sometimes later my tobacco starts tasting very salty. It's not anything bad. I smoke Virginia forward blends mostly. I'm wondering why this isn't a consistent taste. Anyone got anything on this?

If my tongue is already irritated the acridness of moist tobacco will taste salty. Virginia has a tendency to hold moisture and the burning sugars in the leaf will also create moisture. Dump a bowl next time when it starts and see what is happening under the cherry.

Thanks for replying. I smoke my tobacco very dry. I already fought the moist tobacco monster.

  • Same pipe all day?
  • Pipe cleaned between bowls?
  • Half-way through each bowl, or after 7½ bowls?
  • What sort of pipe(s)?

Mostly happens in my cob. Happens in my briar too which is Grabow. No cleaning between bowls. And it happens about halfway through the bowl. And after about 7 or 8 bowls.

I think it's just a reaction that happens after eating/drinking certain things. I'm guessing. Like I said though...it's not unpleasant. Just wish it was more consistent.

If you are smoking commercial blends, then propylene glycol (PG) condensate is accumulating within the stem/bit. With PG or without PG, tars will condense within the stem.

Next time that you finish a bowl, knock out the ash, then—in a safe location—blow forcefully through the bit, while pointing the top of the bowl into a wastebasket or bare ground area. If you see liquid appear in the bottom of the bowl, that may be what is altering the taste. That liquid blown from the stem can be mopped out of the bottom of the bowl with a Q-tip.
