Washington, D.C. Earthquake 2011: 5.9 Earthquake Hits Nation's Capital, Felt In New York

Preliminary reports are indicating that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in Virginia at 1:51 pm EDT., according to the USGS.
Shaking has been reported as far north as New York. Reports of shaking have also been coming in from the New England area. According to the USGS, a magnitude 5.5 Eastern US earthquake can typically be felt as far as 300 miles away.
The USGS reported that epicenter of the quake was located in Louisa, Va. just southeast of Charlotteville and northwest of Richmond.

I heard this fault hasn't been active in 200-300 million years. We felt it in Cleveland too.

A lot of people think a 5.9 is a smallish earthquake, problem is, buildings, bridges etc were not designed for an earthquake of that magnitude.. on the east coast that is!

I had just installed a giant set of batteries down in Herndon Virginia. I finished and drove my car down to lock the site gates, it happened just as I was driving down the bumpy drive, I took the crew and a quarter mile away pulled into a restaurant, every one was outside and I thought that was odd, We walked in and they followed us back in and took our order, they were not Native English speakers, and nobody said a word. I had a devil of a time getting hold of the operations center to automatically log out of the site I had been at, that was odd too. Then I saw that I had no cell signal although I had just finished at the tower and new it was supposed to be up and running. I drove back over and flipped on the radio and heard about the whole thing. Never felt it, but it knocked quite a few cell sites off the air, including the one I had just been too. I assume a microwave misalignment was to blame.

I was in the 5.9 Whittier quake in California, it lasted 45 seconds and was vertical and lateral, afterwards I needed a diaper change, My first one, locals looked mildly annoyed, after shocks all day and I had enough earthquake for ever. That 45 seconds at 5.9 was way terrifying! The earth is not supposed to move around like that, the brain cannot process it properly, at first.

That's funny. My cousin was out there for the big one (20 years ago or so). He, like me, was also born and raised in Cleveland. He told me that when it hit, he was in the doorway of his apartment. He looked outside and he said the road looked like waves in the ocean. As soon as it was over, he got in his truck and headed back to Cleveland. He said he left everything there including his girlfriend...at the time.

Interesting how we interpret the causes of unexpected natural events.

In New York City, people said they thought they had been struck by another airplane. In Philadelphia, some thought it was a bomb. Folks in the Pentagon assumed they were under attack. In towns near Interstate highways, the assumption was that a semi had hit the building. In rural Mineral Virginia, epicenter of the quake, a woman who lives near railroad tracks thought it was a runaway train, and the Sheriff believed that the building had been hit by a tractor.

My first thought--here in southwest Virginia--(having lived in San Francisco and Berkeley in the past) was, "Oh, a small earthquake." My second thought was, "Oh, this is Virginia!" My third thought was, "I wonder if that was the toilet falling through the warped floor of the bathroom?" I checked the bathroom, and still had a toilet. I went outside to inspect the brick foundations of the house. No problems. Then I saw the damage. Half the pears on one of my pear trees now lay on the ground.

Thats interesting Bob, this morning I found 20-30 pears on the ground as well. However, I think it was the deer, a few were bitten, so no to the quake.

Im in eastern part of KY . Some say they felt it about 60 Miles west of me . I didn't feel a thing .

Now speaking of pears , I have a little pear tree thats beside my house that turns ripe about the middle to end of August . They are ripening now and boy they taste good .
