HelloWell I ordered a pound of Virginia Red Leaf and All Naturally grown Burley, I didn't get the case. This will be my first experience with whole leaf tobacco huh I have never even seen a tobacco plant let alone a leaf except for on the net. anyways when I get it I will shred some of each to try, I want to try the red alone first then mix it with the burley. I am used to full flavor smokes and can and do smoke them with or without a filter. So my question is which should I choose for my first experience with the whole leaf filter or filter less?

it depends on what you like. i use more virginia tobacco than burley. burley is pretty strong so i mix mine between 10 to 20 percent burley but that is just me.

I guess I don't know what I like and want to get the best out of the flavor so I am not sure if a filter will block some of the flavor.

What do you plan to shred with?
I am going to use a scissors because I don't have a shredder yet.

Haha this isn't some weak insipid leaf, there is tons of flavor with what you ordered, you don't need to worry about the filter catching it all.
Don't go too high on the burley, start at like 5%by weight, and go up by a few % each cigarette until you go too high.

Great choice on the VA red, every time I smoke a bowl of that I just can't get over how damn good it is, just blended with 10% perique.

Thanks SmokesAhoy, I don't plan on going overboard with the burly although I just might roll some up alone just to get the taste/ feel of it.

UPDATE!!

Well I got home from work yesterday and had my package of tobacco waiting for me, since I work 2 jobs I couldn't do anything with it until I got home from my second job. As soon as i got home again, I opened and inspected the red leaf. Now I cant protest to the quality of the leaf because I have never seen a whole leaf tobacco befog but they did look and smell good. the red leaf did seem to have some bug holes in it but not much and no dust that I saw plus this is coming from am untrained eye, I am not worried about it.

I took a leaf and cut it to stuff in a filtered tube, the tobacco was a little moist but seemed to stuff well with my powermatic mini. I was quite pleased with the flavor when I smoked it. To me it was a mellow sweet flavor no harshness at all but a good throat hit. I enjoyed it.

I really like the flavor of the Oriental. After trying a few different tobaccos, I am now mixing about 25% Oriental, 25% Bright leaf and 50% Lemmon leaf. I have long since ran out of the Burly but might try some of the Maryland. I don't use a casing on my tobacco but was thinking of ordering some to try.

Without a filter, I would have no menthol.
I use a lot of burly and don't even taste the menthol anymore.
