I can't manage to ferment my burley raw tobacco in such a way that it smells and tastes like good light tobacco. Unfortunately, I didn't write down how I did it! The burley tobacco was so light that I could smoke it almost pure! And the aroma and smell of the leaves smelled nicely like tobacco and not like this time like raw strong dirty tar tobacco!

I don't know where my mistake is! I only have a normal oven available at the moment! I order my tobacco online! So raw tobacco ! I plan to build an open one or buy a crockpot in the future.

However, I would need tips on how to proceed now!? As long as the tobacco is still fresh! I hope you understand me! (English is not my language. I'm from Germany!)

I'm a bit desperate. My burley smells like shit!

I am very grateful if someone helps me and I will also open a photo thread

Hi Wotan, where did you buy your tobacco? I'm dealing since five years with whole leaf tobacco bought by eurotabak.de (the only serious online seller in the EU, as far as I know...), i make cigarette blend, pipe blend, and also roll up some toscano style cigar from time to time, with full satisfaction now.
I have to say that in the beginning I was quite disorientated, and it took a little bit of study and time for really enjoy raw tobacco (read through this forum, you'll learn a lot... I'll be always grateful to these guys for the treasure of knowledge they share), but I would never go back to commercial tobacco now.
You can soften burley in various ways: just aging, toasting, stoving, kilning, obviously mixing with other qualities, etc... it depends on your tastes, will, and purposes... try to be more specific.
