Here's mine your not so late are we? I need to lower my led today, I made it out of HLG quantum boards, they kick out some major photons per joule. Here's a picture of my Lemon, an Aztec Rustica and Bowling Ball poppys cause they make tons of seeds for baking.IMG_20240420_111046.jpgIMG_20240419_182529.jpg

I wasn't considering making a grow log but this may just be the motivation I need with everything else I have going on. I need to do some research on ripening, curing, drying as it applies to making dry nasal snuff. I have alot to learn and day 1 of this grow log will truely be the first day of a long hard road out of H E double hockey stick!

DAY 1 is April 20th 2024

WISHLIST: will refer to a kind of shopping list of things I would like to get for the crop.
1. Pollination Bags, necessary to prevent cross pollination.
2. MaxiGrow and MaxiBloom are the fertilizers I wish to get, these are hydroponic nutrients used on other smokable vegetable matter. These nutrients are granulated and have a lot of bang for the buck. Yes dare I say Monsanto! I used General Hydroponics before Monsanto bought them out.

For now I am using Clonex and Whitney Farms seed starting mix.

A grow blog isn’t just a favor for the forum- where we all can learn from your experience (successes and failures).
It is also a favor to yourself. Keeping good records help you develop better practices for yourself- showing exactly what you did, or did wrong.
Copying someone directly is often helpful, but your climate is different than anyone else’s, and some materials, or brands may be unavailable to you. Your own firsts (year, strains, soil and fertilizer types), properly recorded, will be helpful, later on.

I had slips of paper with seeding dates: lost.
I have notes taken in my phone: text only, no pictures, just descriptions.
I have a limited grow blog: I refer to it constantly to see what I did and when.

Better notes will help you improve- that’s a grow blog!

Day 2: 4/21/24
Considering I started a new highly physical job just recently, and my muscles are suffering with the post work out recovery. I consider my second day off work pretty successful as far as the grow is concerned. Today I lowered my HLG quantum boards to half the distance, likely doubling the photons. So I dimmed my MeanWell HLG 240H-C1050B all the way down. As the seedlings increase in size I will do other things to increase lighting efficiency untill it's time to harden them off. This past Friday was 5 weeks untill a 90% probably that the last frost has passed here. So fingers crossed I'm hoping they are decent size to move out. If not I have some sliding door glass panels saved up for temporary cold frames. Considering the quantity of seedlings there need will most definitely outgrow the capacity of the light. So we will see, fingers crossed, and reading about post harvest processing in hopes one day I will need to know it. I never harvested a single gram of tobacco in all my forty some odd.............

Wishlist:#3-systematic pesticide safe for use on Tobacco.

I need to find out what kind of systematic pesticides are safe for a crop that's consumed by burning.

When I studied the methods used to grow another crop, that particular camp was especially convinced that not all nutrients and pesticides are safe to be used on a plant that is consumed by burning or heating.
I can't use a product simply becouse its alleged safe for use on a vegetable that is consumed by eating.
Luckily there is a huge industry that fits these parameters, and they spend massive amounts of research and development catering to a demographic of people that smoke their herbs. I have a few years of dust on the knowledge but a keyword for the Canna-Industry is simply (HYDROPONIC), if you don't wanna sin all over your search engines. Check out hydroponic tents and the such and you will see it's not for tomatoe and tobacco. The products are limitless for left handed wacky tobaccy, just be aware there are gigantic gimmicks, just look at the money that the misguided ppl will spend on fertilizers. There are frugal options for all of the products, maxi-Grow and maxi-Bloom are cost effective smokable fertilizers.

I think a pesticide the Grow King promoted was SNS 2-something-something, thanks for being a sounding board, it's all slowly coming back.

If you guys want a perfect grow light for starting seedlings without spending crazy LED money, just get T5 H.O. florescents.

I got all kinds of grow lights I never use anymore, it's a shame I spent thousands it's laufable. My g.f. was the one that enjoyed her herbs, I just loved growing plants of any kind. I used to grow hot Cheyenne Peppers for betting my school mates, back in the 30's

Any tips you have for processing Rustica will be welcomed, have a good night.
Do not let them get root bound- it can stunt them.
Do not starve them for water- same result.
Fertilize heavily- full strength tomato fertilizer until topping, after topping, half strength for 1-2 weeks, then water till harvest.
When they flower, top them- be ready for suckers!
Sucker them weekly. Never later than every 2 weeks.
Stalk harvest/curing is the best/easiest. Preferably not sooner than 30 days after topping them.
After 45 days, post topping, the nicotine is maxed out.
If, after 45 days post-topping, if the leaves still haven't yellowed, sun curing is your best bet.
Sun curing, no matter what, REALLY improves the flavor of all Rustica varieties I've tried.
I learned most of this from my experience, this forum, and this PDF file:
"Growing Tobacco as a Source of Nicotine

I wonder if a pre-harvest flush like this will help Yellow the leaves, and pull chlorophyll, it works on other crops.

I used this (over 7 years ago) when I grew Jamaican Tomatoes for my ex-Gf.IMG_20240422_025337.jpg

Just read the ad copy for the
“Flawless finish”
Looks like snake oil to me.
But I’ve been a “jaded old codger” since I was 9. (According to my parents, anyway)

Since heavy metal is a contaminant in tobacco soils (fertilizer sources, it seems),
Methods of fixing it/flushing it from the plants would be an important development for the industry- and they don’t mention or try it.
Trying to pull nitrogen from the soil or the plant would cause a deficiency- not an improvement in leaf quality, or speed up the maturation.
You have 2 varieties:
The Lemon will probably be very easy for you to cure, due to the plant’s growth habits.
The Aztec…..yeah- everyone has trouble with it. Sun curing has been the best method for me.
Here’s my experience with it:

As for the flush- try it on half of each variety, and compare the results- make sure to label which plants get which treatment, so that you don’t lose track, after harvest and processing, so you can make a good comparison.

Day 4: 4/24/24, I'm just checking in mid week, the new job is still kicking my ass, still perfect attendance tho.

I noticed the Lemon Rustica is pulling ahead of the Aztec at the same age. The lemon are on the right, IMG_20240424_070230.jpgAztec the left.I must admit there is certain appeal to a Rustica plant that's named Lemonka becouse of the color the leaves turn while still on the plant. I may put only a few seeds aside and plant the rest of them.

Roderick sent me a couple samples, the one is Wilson's of Sharrow's, "Extra M", I was surprised once the Menthol settles there is a very nice rich smokey scent/taste underneath. I wonder if there is a snuff like this without all the Menthol? If your a fan of menthol this dry nasal snuff is very very nice. The menthols a little strong for my taste, but I love the undercurrents.IMG_20240424_065955.jpg

O yeah, I almost forgot, check out this led driver I found on a pole light that was knocked down and destroyed in a hotel parking lot, the whole aluminum head was busted up, the driver seems ok even tho the base plate is peeled away a lil'. If I get a spare minute to check it and it turns out to be ok, it will be a sweet find for sure. I will see you all later this week, be cool, stay safe

I am going to order a couple things for the early stages of my crop.

What do you guys think of MAXI-GROW nutrients, by general hydroponics?

It is a lot of (Bang-for-the-Buck), I found an internet retailer that sales the 2.2lb bag of granules for around $12.oo U.S.D. plus shipping. I will likely order this tonight around 6pm unless one of you convinced me of a better option, thanks guys your help is valuable.

Something like this:
sells for about $20 for an 18 pound bag, contains no obvious chlorine sources, and is suitable for tobacco, if applied to a garden bed at the rate specified for tomatoes.

Never tried any other brand of granular fertilizer- I tend to favor liquids.
But, I do know not to use osmocote on Lemonka!
Check the leaf color in my blog, mentioned above.
And- don't forget; suckering will continue AFTER you've cut the plant down, and hung it up!
(So don't just hang it up and forget about it!)

I like the idea of dry granulated nutrients, becouse I'm not a fan of buying bottled water for the garden. Sometimes I mix this stuff pretty strong and feed during a rain, mother nature loves to help me with the garden.
Hey! Years ago I used that exact fertilizer for my first indoor grow of little Dutch. I think I used it at half strength? Anyways, the plants loved it.

I have had great success on lots of other plants with maxigro and maxibloom as well as the ever elusive floramato. However after a couple seasons using it I discovered that 50lb bags of 15-5-15 calmag special from my local feed store was just as effective and another 50-60% cheaper.
