Hello, I'm just wondering if Miracle-Gro Tomato fertilizer is ok on more mature plants. I have heard that urea is bad for tobbaco, but have also heard its ok for for mature plants.?

Cheers, Matt

There is some back and forth argument here on the forum as to whether or not urea is bad for young seedlings, but by transplant time I think the majority agree that urea is fine for the established seedlings. I use urea free orchid fertilizer for my starts and then granular garden fertilizer with urea when I broadcast fertilizer on the patch. Your mileage may vary.

if i understand properly its only bad when added to a very inorganic growing condition. like a float tray or maybe also basic sterile growing medium. when added to soil the soil has the biology it needs to convert it into other forms of nitrogen. so its more like your adding types of ammonia.
just not sure why it applies more to tobacco.
but once tobacco transplants are in the ground ive dissolved straight urea in a watering can and watered around the plants and nothing bad happened

i give anything 1/4 strength as soon as it sprouts. even if the soil has some built in nutrients. as long as your doing some kind of ramp up from diluted at first and staying close to directions ive never seen too early be a thing, only seen things grow faster.

what kind of growing medium and fertlizer are you using now

Hey Matt, I've used MG for tomatoes quite often all the way from starting seedlings to maturity with good results. I use a sterile medium to start my seeds, 50/50 vermiculite/perlite. When starting the seeds, I only use about a quarter teaspoon MG to a gallon of water with a few grains of Epsom salts to supply magnesium. As the plants grow you want to gradually increase the strength up to about a teaspoon per gallon of water. Thing is, I don't know what kind of nutrients are already in your soil. So, what works for me, might not work for you.

I use Miracle Grow all purpose on all of my seedlings of every kind at 1 spoon per gallon just like it says on the box. I start using it on tomatoes at 3 weeks and tobaccos at about 4 weeks. I use it until they get planted out. It works excellent. My AG agent even recommended it because it also contains many micro nutrients. No need to worry about the urea or chloride. The urea won't hurt the plants in the concentrations MG contains and the chloride is in such small amounts that it is long gone after the plants hit the field. Try to avoid any chlorides after planting them out. It can affect the burning qualities of the tobacco. I use BX Pro Mix for starting all my plants.
