I ground up my Fall crop of Little Yellow this morning and started a batch of puro snus with most of it. I'll give a review in a few weeks.

I alkalized my LY snus after cooking this morning and the reaction was intense, (extreme nose burning and eye watering fumes) so I expect it to be a very high nicotine content.
How long did you let it sit for? I heard you are supposed to let it sit in your fridge/freezer for a week to let the grind absorb the alkalizer

Honestly, I usually will take a daily sample after 3 days, but it won't be at its best until about 3 to 4 weeks in the fridge. After that, I'll split it up into 4-ounce bags and freeze until needed. Having made that admission, so far this batch is kind of bland and green tasting. This is due to improper aging/kilning on my part. Hopefully it will improve over the next week or so, but it is usable as is.

Today is 17 days from alkalization and the snus continues to improve. The grassiness has gradually been replaced with a richer tobacco taste. At this point, I would rate it as very good. The nicotine content is high, and the bitterness is low. I'll probably let it age another week in the fridge before freezing.
The plant is a good producer, yields slightly more than One Sucker, but is more susceptible to brown spot. It is a good choice for a standalone snus.

Sorry to dig up an older thread but how did it end up curing since we're over a month since the last update? Did it improve further from the last report?

It turned out very good after 3-4 weeks aging in the refrigerator and it improves more in a can in your pocket. The only flavoring I added to this batch was kosher salt. Normally I will routinely add ammonium chloride and mulethi powder, but Little Yellow does not need any flavorings to produce a very good snus. It's not as high in nicotine as some other dark varieties I've grown, but it still satisfies.

That's good to know! I saw one users recipe for Ettan and that is something I really want to try since thats my all time favorite snus. Glad you enjoyed yours and it turned out good!

Last update on my LY snus. Now that I'm down to the last few ounces, I've decided that LY is my new favorite for a puro snus. It has a rich tobacco taste and a hint of sweetness that is absent in other dark varieties. My only beef with it is that the leaves developed a lot of brown spot during growth. I'll try to grow more soon though. That particular crop was grown during a poor season with above normal rainfall and lots of cool, cloudy days. I plan on planting about a month later this fall so that rainy season should be well past when the plants are realizing the most growth and nearing maturity. This should help with the disease issue.
