Hi all,

I'm starting to prepare my first tobacco grow ever. Im a "hardcore" pipe smoker so the agenda is to grow some hopefully nice pipe tobacco. I prepared a second field in my upper garden in wish I plan to have my tobacco crop. Synthetic chemicals are not for me. I want it to be a organic grow. The plan is to grow some Golden Virginia and Samsun 15.

Question about the soil : It is very loose and contains a high concentration of sand. Do I need to PH test it? Do I need further steps into soil improvement?
Any comments, suggestions, ideas, criticism are welcome.

Peace!

A soil test is always helpful! But, I'm willing to bet that even without a soil test ( this first year) you will grow some nice tobacco... it grows like a weed.
By the way, for a pipe I really like Black Sea Samsun Maden, it definitely has a very nice taste to it!.. very nice!

Looks like a brand new garden, any previous plantings besides grass., recenct years.

Your absolutely right. This garden is new. I removed the top layer of grass. As far as I know there have never grown anything but rail road tracks. The area here was a old train station. In my front garden the soil is full of coal.

No, It is one I grew this year from GRIN. I grew some Black Sea Samsun-Canik that doesn't have much of a taste. I plan to send some seeds to this site soon, I'll include some of the Maden seeds.

If the coal in your soil is soft coal you will be rich in sulfur and may be a bit acid. The fact that your grass is nice and green suggests this to me. This is a good thing as a 5.8 Ph works well. In CT - USA we have a state Agricultural service that will test soil for a very modest fee. If you have a similar service in Denmark I suggest you use it. I work on the theory that there are enough surprises already so I try to limit them.

Good Luck. I've been at this for two years and am having a lot of fun.
