From first hand experience, marbles wear away pretty quickly. I don't think I'd want to inhale anything that might have silica in it. If you do go with ceramic, run them for a few hours in whatever mill with water and then wash, rinse and dry. That will take off the loose pieces and sharp edges, after that, ceramic wears very slowly. Real bearing balls are not usually plated, neither is steel tumbling media.

With any silica it WILL scar the lungs!!!

holyRYO, I was doing some straightening up in the kitchen today and may have stumbled across what you are looking for. I bought a small coffee grinder to make my own Turkish coffee from regular coffee. This has an espresso setting that I think would be perfect for snuff. This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beac...ywords=Hamilton+Beach+electric+coffee+grinder

It'll grind something finer than frog's hair split three ways. Now, that's fine. There are other models, give them a look over.

I tried homemade snuff. Other then wondering if there was any brain matter in the resulting expectorate that hit the wall near me it didn't really seem very interesting.

However if I run across Toques whiskey and honey I'd certainly try snuff again.

I would settle for a frog's hair split two ways. Looks promising, I need a coffee grinder anyway, multi-tasking, thanks.

I am finding the natural snuffs to be low in taste and rather boring, plain tobacco does not seem to have much "taste" in the nose. The American Scotches have some Dark Fired in them that make them interesting, but like smoking Dark Fired, they burn out my taste buds if over consumed. Citrus oil types seem popular, and are very nice at first, but I tend to get an aftertaste of oil (petroleum like) that makes my cigarettes taste off. Menthol snuff taste better than menthol cigarettes imo, cleaner tasting. Liking sprearmint flavored the best so far. Seems like some sort of flavoring is required if one was to make their own.

I had the Wiskey and Honey in my shopping cart, deleted it the last minute before ordering yesterday. Oh well, next time.

The sniffing snuff I am makeing, Is a hint of Jack. I use the old "TWO ROCK" grind method. I found a large flat river stone, and a round one that holds in the hand nice. I put the flat one in a plastic bowl and drop the leaf on it over and over till it is a fine powder. The stones are smooth and work good on the out of case leaf. I just hope I don't loose My rocks. My marbles are already gone. Mad-

I just placed an order with MisterSnuff last night. Samuel Gawith has the tap boxes that NatetheGreat mentioned. Their 10g portions normally sell for $1.99 US, though the selection of varieties in 10g boxes appears to be pretty limited right now. Gawith and Hogarth also sells this portion for the same amount. This is a relatively cheap way to try a number of different snuffs.

I would advise against buying English snuffs in the 10g tap boxes like Samuel Gawith and Gawith & Hoggarth sell, they are not airtight. English snuffs are water-based and by the time they get to you they are totally dried out and dusty. German and Indian snuffs are OK in the tap boxes because they are oil-based and take much longer to dry out. Many English snuff manufacturers sell smaller quantities in tins and they are much better if you are looking to sample small amounts.

Been trying more. A couple American Scotches, smells and taste just like a mixture of plain Dark Air and Dark Fired. This should be easy to replicate or improve on with whole leaf. Tried a dozen small tins of English snuffs, most were disappointing, I think stale, hardly any flavor. Freshness seems key with flavored snuff. Even though I am not a menthol smoker, really liking spearmint and menthol.

Most American scotches have a great smoky scent but are a bit difficult to take until you get used to them. If you are looking for an easier snuff to take with the smokiness and good nicotine content I recommend Viking Dark which is made from fire cured Virginia. I was going to plant Virginia this year to try to replicate Viking Dark but my Virginia seeds failed to germinate. That's OK - this is my first year growing and I was able to concentrate more on the growing aspects of tobacco without worrying about setting up something to fire cure my leaf.
