A common way of securing the box lid at the factory was with a single nail at the opening edge. With your newly purchased cigars locked behind a box that was nailed shut, it was mighty handy to have a thinly tapered metal tool that could pry the box open, and a notch to remove the nail, so that it didn't gouge your hand the next time you reached in for a cigar.

While no longer common, a few do still use a small nail to tack the box shut. Just the other day I was restocking some La Aroma de Cubas and had to pry the boxes open and remove the nails.
Of course, I didn't have that handy tool so I used a screwdriver.
