I made a batch of snus from my homegrown Shirazi. The Shirazi was described on the seed site, as having a "fairly high" nicotine content, so I figured I'd give it a try. When I alkalized it, I got a little bit of that nose burning sensation, but not nearly like the choking, burning sensation you get when alkalizing dark air cured. After I aged it a week or so I tried it and sure enough, it was low in nicotine. So a few days ago, I made a batch from dark air cured purchased from WLT. When I alkalized this one, the fumes drove me outdoors, this is a sure sign of high nicotine. So the plan is to blend these two batches 50/50, That should make a fairly strong snus, as far as nicotine content. The Shirazi has a little bit of a green tea flavor to it, so it should have been aged a bit longer, but other than that, it tastes fine. So far, the very best snus I've made was from a 50/50 mix of dark air cured and MD609 purchased from WLT. So my search for that elusive, perfect variety for snus, goes on. This spring I plan on growing Small Stalk Black Mammoth, Little Dutch and some Rustica.
