I had the privilege of trying this the other evening. Boy did I like it.

Who else has smoked the tambo? Anyone tried replicating it with homegrown?

Use air-cured Indonesian leaf from the Island of Sumba, to make a sailor's perique (bind it tightly in rope). Let it sit for a few years. The actual variety of Nicotiana tabacum used is indeterminate--maybe cigar leaf, maybe something like @Tutu's dark air-cured varieties found in Timor-Leste.
