Taxonomy of tobacco varieties

Taxonomy may not be the right term, but is there a good source for looking at the development of various types of tobacco in terms of a family tree? I’m just curious as to how different types were crossed, and their ancestry.

For instance, I have Jaffna seedlings started. Northwoods describes them as likely related to Orinco, and my understanding was that Virginias came from Orincos, and so forth.

I suspect that there’s a thread for this that I couldn’t find.

The pedigree is what you are looking for. It is not documented for many, many varieties of N. tabacum. Where it is documented, you can locate it by searching the ARS-GRIN database:

Search Accessions GRIN-Global

npgsweb.ars-grin.gov

Begin each search with "Nicotiana tabacum" followed by the variety of interest (e.g. "Nicotiana tabacum Long Red"). [The ARS-GRIN database contains everything from arugula to zinnias, so you need to include that genus-species binomial.]
