Waiting on late seeds to finish here. need to clean up and some clover down.

I haven't call the local feed store yet to find out what clover seed is available. Does it make a difference or will any clover do?

I have one more priming of Burley, and I've finished the Orientals, but I've just started on the flue cure and cigar varieties. It's going to come down to the wire for me.

Any clover will work also Alfalfa works great for building up soil .
It is best left to rest for two to three years in clovers before planting again. Just seeding over winter does not do much to build up the soil .
Wheat makes a good cover crop if you plan on plowing next spring .

I sew wheat for my cover crop . If I plan on letting my soil rest , I will drill Alfalfa or clover into my wheat in the spring close to or after the last frost . Early fall works great too but the plants has to be established to withstand the cold freezing winters .. Wheat will grow and I cut it for hay then the clovers will take over . I most usually leave them for three to five years . They will die out after so long of a time ( Years ) .

Alfalfa and clovers build up soil with natural fertilizers . But it takes at least two years to do really good , three to five is better .

Thanks BB, so if we get winter wheat since we do plan on planting that should be the plan. Both areas for planting very fertile. Hub has organic farmer friend/produce/who is helping him learn the ins and outs of building happy soil. I'm busy gleaning info here. We have another area we want to plant (this is not all for tobacco) that doesn't have decent top soil so putting diff things on it to start making. We feel here that having as much as possible a self sustaining garden/where we can also do winter crops, is wise due to a lot of global factors. Since we have a lot of animals to grow for it's a big project.

rose, I've had great results sowing feed wheat. It's a lot cheaper than seed wheat and it seems as if every seed sprouted. No problem at all.
