All:

I'm a central Florida gardener looking to grow my first tobacco plant. I wouldn't mind a suggestion or two for ones that might be good for a newbie in my location. I intend it to be container-grown, and good taste and some punch would be nice. A few free starter seeds would be best of all.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forum Dunning. A good place to start is with the tobacco FAQ's: http://fairtradetobacco.com/links.php?ab_s=1

Are you growing for cigarettes, cigars, snuff, snus, etc? The recommended varieties will depend on your intended use. One of our members sells seed and there are some good descriptions of the plants and their use if you click on the variety name: Northwood Seeds Retail

Thanks! Burly 21 seems like a start, or maybe one of the Virginias, what do you think? I'm not seeing a lot of info re the climate needed. Florida is surely too humid for most of these varieties but I'm hoping to pick one with a better shot of working out well for someone new at this :)

im in north florida.... and anything can be grown here... by central fla. ?? what town ???

we just have a high risk for hornworms. here due to our tropical climate...

im on my 4'th year of growing.. and all the rain we get is good for a homegrower..

your a little late to start seeds. but a member '' bigbonner'' sells plants .. that would be youir best option is to buy some plants... look in the forum titles. and youll find the section. for plants for sale.

or knucklehead. can give you a link... he's good at that stuff...

Welcome to FTT. If you check out Chickens grow Log from last yr.
It might help you out for conditions.
I would get some plants from BigBonner if he still has them.

Thanks all for the welcomes and advice. Brown Thumb your pic is hilarious.

Part of the reason I'm doing this, as a bit of a gardener at heart (www.facebook.com/piercefarmstead is me), is to experience this all from seed onwards, so after consulting Paul at Northwoodseeds as well, I'm going to roll with their Pipe Tobacco blend which has 401 Cherry Red, Burley 21 and Black Sea Samson. Then I'll plant just a few of each per some of the info around here, and see what happens :). I'll do a blog as well once I get rolling :).

Thanks!

I never did get around to planting them last year and still have the seeds. When would you guess is the ideal month to plant them in Pinellas County? I'll roll with your best guess :) ? (I do realize less will germinate because I waited.) Thanks!

Probably April down there, but wth, start some seeds and see what happens, you can always move your pots around.

Look up your average last frost date. Start seeds germinating indoors 6-8 weeks prior to that.

I grew up in that county. I would guess they should be in the ground by March. Start seeds in January?
