I will be planting tobacco this Summer, and I was curious as to whether or not tobacco plants had a strong aroma. I'm trying to decide how many plants to grow, and I don't want to piss off my neighbors by planting large amounts of strong smelling plants mere feet from their windows. In case type matters, I'm planting CT Shadeleaf, CT Broadleaf, Havana 142, and PA long red.

Thanks,
-Scott

Don"t worry about what your neighbors stink! Is it your property? I would worry about if you can get some good plants. Tobacco plants are also available in garden variety not fit for smokin. Great ornamentals....Why would your neighbors get pissed, and you should educate them if they do. I have low tolerance for interference in personal pursuits, personaly.

Arm youself with education on the subject, cause there is plenty out ther to justify you growing your own, good luck and many homegrowns later.

With the varieties you have listed, you won't have any problem with "aroma". Now if you ever plan on growing a couple hundred Rustica plants, your neighbors might have a good reason to complain...unless you have a "Cat Lady" in the neighborhood...then all the neighbors will think it's her.

Thanks for everyone's input. It is my property, but at the same time I want neighbors that care enough to call the cops if they notice someone breaking in, haha.

just tell them it's a retarded tomato... jk in all seriousness, just don't say anything unless they ask. toss some wildflower seeds around them and tell em it's a flower garden. the flowers will help with a cover scent, and you can tell them the tobacco are a breed of nightshade flower you are growing out for seeds

lol, i was thinking that, tomatoes on steroids but no fruit (mexican storebought tomatoes experiment?)

i actually thought it would be bad to grow other things (chocking my baccy, or getting it in my harvest, or stealing nutrients from it)

umm i thought we didnt need to worry about smell.

nightshade? ok

smell is not noticeable on many breeds, but I hear some are smelly. if you put the flowers 3 or 4 feet away they won't rob the nutrients. Tobacco is in the same family as Nightshade and tomatoes. There is even trace amounts of nicotine in tomatoes.

i think it will get their attention though, enough to call the city. ill just try growing it on its own first, and then well see.

I've never notices any disagreeable aroma with Nicotiana tabacum, but I most definitely have with Nicotiana rustica. Three years ago I grew about 80 -100 rustica plants from seedman and when they were in full bloom, they smelled just like stepping into fresh cat shit. I had a couple of news reports out in the field and I had to laugh when one actually started checking the bottom of his shoes.

I grew 5 rustica last year. I had a fence around the patch so my dogs didn't tear my plants up. After flowering when weeding and pulling suckers I was sure I could smell dog crap. Turns out it was the rustica. Spent time looking on the ground for the crap and holes in the fence, never found either. Great plant for that neighbour that hangs over the fence to chat when you are busy.
