Is it possible to remove the topping from a blend?

I have seen folks claiming to put tobacco in boiling water and let it steep for 8-12 hours to reduce the flavor. Threads on HERE say it also removes most nicotine and technically turns the tobacco into a cavendish.

The problem with topped tobaccos is the propylene glycol normally used to prevent the topping from evaporating. If I wanted to remove a toppings scent I would let the tobacco dry out. You could rehydrate and dry out a few times if needed. It will be surprising if you ended up with anything you liked. Washing tobacco is common for use as shisha. Removing nicotine content is the only valid reason to wash tobacco in my opinion.

Well I have returned to pipe tobacco, and one of my first tries was peterson sherlock holmes. The burley is stronger in flavor then it should be but tobacco is top notch.

I just cant hack the citrus topping they use. And i admit I have read a few reviews where the topping DID go away after YEARS of aging.. i dont have that time.

I did see on some forums about soaking it in water to kill both taste and nicotine, so felt like asking.

Bergamot can be allergenic. This could be what is creating your aversion. Sherlock Holmes also can bight if not careful. I have had both good and bad smokes with it. If you like the flavor you could add another tobacco to it to soften it. If you don’t like it, there would be no harm in experimenting with some of it.
