I just purchased a used tuck cutter and have 2 questions.
First is how difficult is it to change the blades? It looks straightforward but… any tips would be appreciated.
Second question is I see a gap between the blades and the body of the cutter. Is this normal and if not should the blades be replaced? It does seem to cut just fine.
Thanks
Steve

I’m no expert in tuck cutters myself, but I see what you’re saying with the gap between the body & the blade. Does either part seem loose? If so, you may be able to tighten it. In regards to sharpening, I’d say that when it starts tearing wrappers at the foot of a cigar is when you’d want to look at sharpening. A whet stone for sharpening knives would work. I believe there is a post around here somewhere that Webmost put together, regarding disassembling, sharpening, and reassembling. Personally I have a tuck cutter with more of a star shaped blade, which is slightly different than yours. You do have a nice looking tuck cutter, I will say that!

Welcome to the forum. Feel free to introduce yourself in the Introduce Yourself Forum.

Here is a long discussion of replacing a tuck cutter blade:

Your blades seem to be in fairly good shape, from your photos. In only some of the photos, the lower blade appears to my eye to be positioned too low, and might need to be elevated. (Loosen the Allen screw, and adjust.) Removing the upper blade is trickier.
  • compress the coil spring using a large vice-grip on the heavy collar
  • remove the retaining pin
  • slowly release the spring force
I don't appreciate a space. The blade edge tapers must face away from one another, as they are presently arranged.
