This Corojo 99 was grown in 2015 in the Dominican Republic from Cuban seed. This leaf is a deep mahogany reddish brown. It has a malty sweetness with notes of cedar, nutmeg and white and black pepper. The smoke is thick, full bodied, earthy and smooth. Corojo 99 is a robust full flavored tobacco – a strong flavor to remember.
The 1940s Corojo (from the Corojo family farm in Cuba), was a tremendous success for cigar construction. Its poor resistance to pest and mold, however, along with the closing of Cuban trade, left it to failure. Criollo 98 and Corojo 99 are the most similar hybrid varieties to thrive, now transplanted onto Latin American soil and island nations like the Dominican Republic.
This leaf is taken as the Viso Priming (about eye height) so expect more nicotine and less combustibility than the Seco priming, but less nicotine than the Ligero .
As with all Whole Leaf Tobacco products, the leaf is packaged in vapor-proof bags and in perfect order for working when it arrives to you. The leaf will remain is perfect condition for at least a year if unopened. Once opened, any unused leaf can be saved in this condition by re-using the packaging. Simply fold the opened end and sealing it with tape.

Another good viso, worth adding to the kit. The one caveat is that this one seems to change quite a bit between shipments; some of the shipments are gold, some are less golden. Several of us old-timers are very fond of this one, though, especially when it’s a great batch. it mixes well with the “Dominican ligero,” whatever varietal that is (although the Dominican Ligero is another leaf that varies greatly shipment to shipment). But those two leaves go well with the strongest seco you can find, particularly wrapped in a lighter wrapper that lets the flavors come though, e.g. a CT Shade or Candela.

Outstanding leaf, perfect case, larger than the corojo ligero and just a step down in strength (makes sense) but the same excellent flavor profile. Has a floral finesse to the nose that other tobaccos don’t have. Very highly recommended.

This Viso has been a favorite of mine for quite a while. I venture off to try to find another worthy blend and always wind up back with the Corojo viso.

This is my go to Viso for the pepper kick. It has found its way into a lot of my blends lately.
