Maryland 609 is a Air Cured type tobacco with a thin leaf – making it much more palatable than Burley. while still providing a full tobacco flavor. Whole Leaf Tobacco sells our Maryland 609 in the traditional air cured variety. Maryland 609 is also commonly grown today in Pennsylvania.
Expect your delivery to be a thin to medium bodied leaf.
Maryland blends well with other tobaccos. Combining with flue cured Flue Cured Red and Lemon, and a little Turkish/Oriental provides a full flavored American style blend.

Near perfect case out of the bag. Nice full smooth hex brown ale tobacco smell and very good complete leaf structure when unfurled. Light medium to very thin lamina, getting down to nearly first prime virginia leaf thickness, with more prominent cross ribs near the main. The main ribs had a strange coloration to them towards the bottom, leading me to open it right away fearing mold: not a trace found, and it smells GREAT. I think that’s just what this variety does. Very good stuff, and quite different from your standard burley.

Low to medium case. Delicate, thin leaf, yet surprisingly elastic. Brought up in case a bit this will make a nice binder leaf for a roll. Nice woodsy pouch aroma. Thin, whispy, very spicy smoke. Stout throat hit. The peppery spice over powers the flavor. Definitely condimental for my style of blending.

Wow fast delivery as usual. Perfect case from the bag no problems with mold as warned with air cured types. The leaves are huge, thicker at the tips to very thin. I have never had straight 609 it has a great smell and tastes pretty darn good. It’s strong for me, It will make a perfect blender for my pipe baccy. Thanks again WLT!

Got my order today. I was happy to be able to get some as it was out of stock for awhile and I noticed last week they added a few to the site. Large leaves, surprisingly thin but manageable to strip. You get a lot of leaves per pound because of how thin it is. Was perfect humidity out the bag, so thin that while I was stripping it was getting a bit dryer rapidly. I removed the stems and put it back in the bag. Made a few cigarettes of straight Maryland 609 to try it and get a feel for it. Was quite nice. It tastes exactly like it smells, caramel/malt/leather with a dry finish on the tongue. Has that tongue bite and dryness of burley on the tongue but is smooth going down. Burns very well straight out the bag. Although it’s manageable straight I’ll blend it to really enjoy it, probably 50/50 with a mix of red, ripe and bright leaf Virginia. Although it has that tongue bite it doesn’t have the throat hit I like so I’ll add a bit of dark air cured to cover that throat hit I seek. I’ve been using red burley tips for a few months now, this is a great substitute because it’s tastier and more forgiving if you put too much. Raw burley can be brutal if there’s too much in the blend. This is a keeper. I’ll restock some soon to make sure I don’t miss out on it after first time purchasing. Nicotine is medium but very present, felt very powerful for a second but tamed itself quickly. More like medium/high nicotine. The very strong mouth feel can be misleading as the rest of the smoking experience is very smooth and flavourful but does leave that burley like burn on the palate and tongue when smoked straight.

Follow up review. I’ve had it for a little over two months and this tobacco deserves and needs to sit a bit when it comes out of the bag. I found it a bit weak at first but now it took a turn towards being stronger yet pleasant. I need a strong cigarette and I am relieved that this gets stronger with time. It loses some of it’s aroma by doubles down on strength.
