Good evening,

Some time ago, I ordered seeds for Bafra from New Hope Seed. Later, I was reading a discussion about orientals on the now-defunct howtogrowtobacco.com forum something interesting. I thought I would check it here just to be sure it's accurate.

Someone posted (and I can't recall who) that if this particular seed from New Hope Seed had small round leaves with no petioles, the variety was Bafra Basma, and that if the leaves were larger with a distinct petiole, it was Samsun-Maden. I scribbled this on the envelope, but I've wondered since if this is correct.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

And, if this is complete hogwash, does anyone know of a reputable source for Samsun-Maden seed?

The Bafra from New Hope Seed forms a heart-shaped to spade-shaped leaf, with a frilled petiole, like other members of the Samsun family (Samsun, Bafra, Trabzon, Samsun-Maden). It is not a Basma type. I'm not sure who might have Samsun-Maden.

I grew these in 2011 using seed from New Hope Seed. (All of their varieties were reliable.)

Tell me Bob, you did not use traditional oriental spacing to get such big leaves !
The Samsun Maden I grew last year (with 6 inches (15 cm) spacing) gave me small leaves, the biggest might have been 8 inches (20cm) long and 4 inches (10cm) large.

Was the flavor orientalish with your big leaves ?
I grew Xanthy two years ago with bigger spacing, maybe 11 inches (25-30 cm) and the result was more "cigarish" than "oriental" (I confess I also gave them some fertilisation...)
I will grow Xanthy again this year, but with the same spacing as I grew Samsun Maden last year (6 in), to see the difference.

Correct. I used 12" spacing that year for Orientals (2.5 square feet per plant). I have since recognized that the aroma of Oriental leaves increases with closer spacing (9" or even 6"), and the nicotine strength diminishes.

This year, my Trabzon leaf will be planted at 1.2 square feet per plant (25 plants in a 5' x 6' bed).

I do seem to recall @istanbulin stating that the Samsun group (which would be "Black Sea" in the table [of unknown sourcing] below) used wider spacing that Basma types.

There is some pretty scary spacing in there!

What did you order specifically to get these?

I may be (and likely am) wrong, but I only see Canik and Black Sea Samsun on his list. I didn't see anything listed as "Samsun-Maden."

I got my Samsun-Maden seeds this year from Northwest seeds.

The B-S-S is S-M. I know it's not on his website (which needs to be updated, ahem), but this has come up in discussion before and is buried somewhere deep in the forum.

"Black Sea Samsun" is the invented, marketeering name given to plain old Samsun by some evil vendor 8 or 9 years ago. Black Sea Samsun is Samsun, not specifically Samsun-Maden. My understanding (from Constantinides) is that the "Maden" version of Samsun was grown in the cool, moist hills to the southwest of city of Samsun and southeast of the city of Bafra. Like Bafra and Trabzon, Samsun-Maden probably began as the same seed a few hundred years ago, but was repeatedly grown in its new location, and slowly differentiated a bit from the original Samsun, based on the seed selection of the growers.

Download C.L. Constatinides (1912) 108 page book on Turkish Tobacco as pdf.

Needs to be updated? lol You are too kind. It passed that stage long ago and now is just shameful. I have had some major issues with publishing to it, which I may possibly have now solved. But I haven't tried it yet out of fear of screwing up what I have there now. I may ask you or Bob for a little advice. There are probably a dozen people here who know a hundred times what I know when it comes to web publishing.

Black Seas Samsun is Samsun. BSS is what the original seed I acquired was labeled so that's what I went with. Samsun Maden is a similar but different strain. I have both. Here is a link to a long list of seed not yet on my terribly out of date website.

And there are a few more that aren't on that list. Like Corojo 99, Pilato Cubano, Ostrolist 316 and probably a couple others I can't think of right now.

Are these varieties available for purchase? I'm looking at placing an order. I'd love to be able to include some of these.

Tom,
Did you end up getting that seed? Skychaser sent me some and it's growing well for me.

I did, thanks. I ended up ordering several other varieties as well.

I planted that one and a few other varieties, oriental, burley and bright.

Got them started a little late, but I should be able to get a good cure before cooler weather hits in late October. Around that time, it's usually in the low 70s during the day with over 10 hours of daylight, so even then the weather is pretty good. Probably the best aspect of living in California is the extremely long growing season.

I also get to confront building a kiln and flue chamber. Yay...
