Hello cigar community,

I am from Germany and there is very limited access to online shops who provide tobacco leafes.
Unfortunately importing from the US is not possible due to extraordinarily high customs and stuff.

I can only get the following tobacco leafes so far:
  • Burley Honey Stringed
  • Kentucky Very Smoked
  • Italia Virginia
  • Virginia Bright
  • Burley
  • Orient Samsoun
  • Virginia Orange
  • Kentucky Sun Cured
  • Virginia Gold
Is there a chance that you can tell me what I can use as wrapper, binder and filler?
Is there maybe a site where I can inform myself about all the differences of these leafes?
I am absolute beginner.

Thank you,
Klaus

Welcome to the forum. Feel free to introduce yourself in the Introduce Yourself forum. If you click the Wiki link above, then select "Tobacco Jargon" from the menu on the left, you will find a discussion of tobaccos.

Your list contains no cigar varieties. You can use burley as a wrapper or binder. I am uncertain what Kentucky Sun Cured is. If it is a dark air-cured Kentucky, then you can use it, together with a Virginia or Oriental as a smokable cigar. If you have a place in which to grow tobacco, then you can order seed from

to produce suitable cigar leaf varieties. Read the New Growers' FAQ on growing tobacco. That link is also in the menu bar above.

Cigars typically have seco, viso and ligero in them. The names have to do with the primings in which they come from, such as ligero which is the upper stalk position. The tobacco varieties used for cigar ( just to name a few) are usually strains like criollo, Piloto and Corojo 99.

You could use the burley and fire cured to make a cigar, but it won’t taste like a commercial cigar, but those leaves could make for some fine pipe blends.

Wie Gehtz Klaus!

Your best bet would be to look into obtaining some French wrapper tobacco and Italian binders and fillers. Though I would also check with some of the cigar rolling factories in the Netherlands like Ollifant and Van Der Donk to see if they're able to sell you whole leaf cuban tobacco direct. Perhaps there are a few German cigar companies you could contact as well. You have to remember most of the tobacco world is still in developing countries and even the farmers in well developed nations really do not rely on computer tech for much more than book keeping.

Also Spain is a really good resource and basically the whole reason the cigar trade even exists. They still import a ton of tobacco from Cuba and the Canary Islands.

The Balkans makes a ton of cigarette tobacco. That might be a fun trip. Grab a few bottles of a good plum schnapps as a gift to the farmer and see if he'd be willing to have a barbecue in exchange.

But as I said earlier tobacco is not the most accessible thing. I think your best bet is tracking down European tobacco farms.

You'll want "air cured" tobacco. Not fire cured or flue cured.

To be honest, you probably have better options for whole leaf tobacco than we do in the US aside from people living in Florida or on the East coast.

Hope this helps

Thank you all for your replies.
I've come up with the idea of growing my own tobacco. I found someone who can plant some plants for me.
I also asked our customs department which told me that buying tobacco leafes is illegal, even from european suppliers.

Best regards,
Klaus

I also bought those tobacco for several years (until I started growing my own). They are quality leaves. Kentucky leaves were available in two variants: "smoked" Kentucky and "very smoked" Kentucky. I never saw Kentucky "sun cured" (probably a mistake). My opinion is that if you want cigar leaves you will have to grow them. I searched (online) for cigar leaves (including on small advertising sites in several countries) - I did not find it, I contacted acquaintances who live in various countries (you have probably noticed that Romanians are well "dispersed" in Europe) with the request to look for some leaves for me - the result was negative. My personal opinion is that in Europe there are no cigar leaves, so you will have to grow tobacco. And .... Welcome to FTT.

By the way, I decided for the following, as these should grow perfect in Germany:
Havanna Z992
Badischer Geudertheimer
Lorscher Wrapper

Not sure if you know them, but it seems like a good combination for a mild cigar.

Thank you,
Klaus

Felllow german here. I will have 2 sorts this year Havanna Dunkelrot and a brazil sort. If the summer will be as warm as the last summers i m pretty sure we will have no difficult at all at growing some nice leaf.

Its quiet depressing that the privat person cant buy raw tobacco but at least we can grow leagally unlike the australian folks.

There is a site where I ordered some seeds last year, they are based in Germany and have some Cigar varieties.

You can also order seeds from Spain:

Viel Spass!
