@Oldfella i was just up at kerikeri and was thinking of your plants when it just came down hard. i hope your plants are ok
Yeah they are all good. Just posted a picture of them on my waiting blog. We seem to miss most of the storms that come. We must be too skinny for them to bother us. Thanks for your concern though and good luck with your grow.

Hi people. Finally an update on my grow.
Coming along nicely now. We had a day of light rain yesterday and it did wonders for my plants.
The position of the patch gives it all day Sun up until about 1 hour before sunset. I check soil moisture levels daily and water as required. This is usually once a week, unless it’s very hot and sunny. The irrigation system is gravity feed from my house tank to soak hoses and is left on overnight. It uses around 1200l (317gal) per night . I top up my tank from my well and as the well has never run dry in the last 100 or so years I don’t expect it to in my lifetime. I’m running a bit of an experiment with a row running by the Pine trees as the soak drain from the septic tank runs down there and the grass is always longer. I’ll get some pics uploaded later today. I need to get some weed spraying done while we have no wind.

Hey Guys
Just a little update. Daughter read the other day about using MSG as a fertilizer so we thought we'd try a little experiment. I have an ornamental (Only The Lonley) that doesn't seem to want to grow so we'll use it and see what happens.

The one with the wooden pegs have been treated with a small Sprinkle of MSG. I will put it in a separate tray to avoid spill over when watering.
Got given a photo yesterday of the settlement in 1980-1982 not sure which but it's interesting so I'll share it with you.

As you can see we even had a little beach, unfortunately the powers that be decided that. Mangroves were essentiall and now we don't.

Finally got my grow chart finished. Rows run from house to river and left to right. It's a lovely mix up as daughter took all the seedlings outside and the wind stirred them all up.

Hope this works, river is at the top of the picture. I should have posted this earlier but it seems to take me longer and longer to get things done nowadays.

Well people, not much happening here at the moment. The last week the North Easter winds blew like crazy. Fortunately we got the wind break netting up in time, Phew lucky huh. No major damage.
This last week is worse hot, high humidity and very smokey from the wild fires, can't go near the baccy, mold and rot are my main concern.
Still what will be will be. Here's a pic of the thermometer inside the house temperature is in °C. I'll have a go at getting a picture of my grow tomorrow, bit late now. 20220208_115806.jpg

Dam, that nor Easter has sprung up again. Now we got hot and humid, windy and misty. My poor old plants are taking a hammering. To top it off the weather guys are muttering about Tropical Cyclones. Just what we need. Still lucky I can do a winter grow if I have to.

Bottom picture was taken this morning and the top one this evening. Only minor damage at the moment

All hot and humid today, not a good day for the baccy. Temperature and humidity inside my house and I got nothing left to open.

Wind has settled down but now the weather people are muttering about Tropical Cyclones again. Just what my plants need now that they are almost ready to harvest.

Maybe it'll just skid down the West Coast and give us a miss, that would be nice the wind would move around to the West, I'm more sheltered from the West. Wait and see I guess. More pictures tomorrow.

Looks like it'll be alright. The wind has already moved to the North. It should in theory go Westerly over night, so my patch will be more sheltered. Next week is looking more settled, the Aussies are sending us a fine spell. Thanks guys.

Updated from the last post. Hopefully they got it right, I've noticed that this weather has seen an increase in the bug population. I had some suckers hanging on a branch, now I have stems hanging on a branch. I'll hopefully be able to check the patch tomorrow.

Well we didn't get much rain but boy did it blow. My plants took a hell of a beating, I was too depressed to get out there today, so I'll leave it till tomorrow.

Our power went out at 11pm last night and has only just come back on. I use gas for cooking so it is just a question of keeping out of the fridge as much as possible. Here's a pic of the outages for the North, all the red marks are outages from the cyclone trees down ect. I'm not surprised on the news they said that gusts of 150kmh were recorded on the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Ah well no worries no one was hurt property damage is minimal and I'll get some more seeds going.

We would call that a weak category 2 if they were sustained winds that speed. In 2004 we took a direct hit from hurricane ivan with sustained winds of 130 mph (209 km). Ivan was a cat 4. Power was out in my neighborhood for 10 days. We had road in and out cleared by 10am the day after (storm was at night). I woke up with a hangober to the sound of chainsaws! Glad everything ok!

Mostly our Cyclones and Tropical storms come from the tropics and have lost a lot of their punch by the time they get to us. This is good, but MY BACCY STILL HATES IT.

It would appear that the majority of my plants that were knocked over by the big blow have decided to stand up again. My main problem now is bugs, I've never seen so many I don't know if it’s the weather, (its been very hot and humid this year), or no Chickens. Finally got a low wind day yesterday and sprayed the hell out of them with Pyretherum. That slowed them down.

Looking better

Decided to start harvesting yesterday. If I'm lucky I might beat the Bugs and get a smoke or two out of the grow.
Not a bad looking leaf.
Nice leaf. Bad light .jpg

Will they leave any for me?
Bug damage .jpg

Been a bad year for my grow. First we wind and storms. Very warm and humid conditions. I was unable to spray for the Bugs, at a guess I would say that they have eaten at least half of my crop. Looks like a winter grow is going to be required.
I've never had to spray for the Bugs before, so, is it the warm humid weather, or the lack of Chickens?
I've Stalk harvested the Virginia Gold and am wondering if I should let a nice sucker grow. What do you guys think? I've grown the odd sucker from a damaged plant before and it has seemed to be OK although it was blended in with the other plants.

Could you tell what was munching on the leaf?
Two breeds Catapiller. One green and the other grey with black stripes. Green one is most likely the white butterfly that creates havoc with cabbages. The other one, don't know. I'll try and get some pics of them tomorrow. I suspect that Slugs and Snails may be involved as the lower leaves are most affected.
