Hii I have some cherry red & Amber leaf seeds. Last year I managed to grow some amber leaf on the 1st of july on a sunny windowsill (In yorkshire) This year nothing seems to be growing its like they come up grow a few leaves then just stop all together :/ I put them in a an unheated propogator the time they did work. This time in a heated propogator but having problems. I turn it of when the sun comes out and then it on when the sun goes. Will I need a heater on during darkphase and open windows when sunny?? :( I've wasted a ton of seeds over the year and not 1 thing has grown. I've been told to use grow lights in a few months or so I'll give it a go :) I feel as if there not getting enough light it's been a terrible wet july this year could this be a reason?

If any ones got any info on a windowsill grow would be much appreciated and will save me some money to! =D

I use Coco compost, Miracle Grow

I'm not the most experienced member here but I swear some varieties just won't grow very well in certain areas. I germinated at least 100 corojo 99 seeds this year and only have 3 successful plants growing! I started them on some store bought seed starting mix (coconut coir, peet moss, vermiculite). The plants are still on the small side when I compare them to other's of the same variety. I'm in Utah USA at 5500 feet above sea level.
I had issues with Kentucky 17 burley last year too but got one plant to go to seed and the seeds from that went crazy this year and did absolutely amazing. So maybe if you get even a single plant to grow and go to seed that seed will be adapted to your climate and grow like crazy for you next year.

Hi watch windows as normal glass filters certain light usually uv and get very very hot. Most certainly not for seedlings of any type.I have found only tropical chillie plants can take it..
The best way to germinate any seeds that I have found is fluorescent lights and good old green house..

I'm just down a bit from you and I plant my seeds mid March in a seed tray with a clear cover over it. I stand it on the kitchen table where it catches the sun and within 10 days or so they've all sprouted. Heated pads and hi-tech lighting systems sound grand but aren't necessary in my limited experience.
Very true I dont use lights but have heated trays(chillies, basil, squash, beans, peppers, ect)just be careful about getting to hot.But What ever works for each plant crack on..

I used this generic seed tray + cover + gravel tray I got from B&Q for around £5. Watered from the bottom and let it dry up before refilling (water lasted 2 weeks)

I also put them in a tray in mid march and left them by the window. They all germinated and grew well. Do you have the heating on during the winter? I had mine at 19 and it worked, plus the (rare) sun shining on the window raised the temperature of the soil to about 25
Screw the heating lol humans are freezing around here plants are happy ......

I sort of forgot about this post, but as an update I had 2 Corojo 99 grow to maturity, one got naturally topped by the wind half way down the stock so I'll get maybe 6 good leaves from. The other I'm letting go to seed and it's over 6ft tall now but has VERY small leaves and the wind constantly tries to kill it. Corojo 99 seems to have a skinny stalk and smaller root ball so the wind is a problem.

As for germination I used the mentioned seed starting mix and seedling heat pads under the trays. I started indoors but when the other varieties started growing I moved the covered tray outdoors for a couple hours a day until they were all acclimated then transplanted into ground, pots, or grow bags.

A general theme with my tobacco is I don't get the height of plants described from others or by seed suppliers.

This seems to be regardless of soil type or pot type. I occasionally get a couple plants as tall as described. So I'm curious if it's the elevation?

Anyways I need to keep everyone posted on things, overall I've had a great growing season this year with more mature plants than I can reasonably process, so I guess that's a good thing!

Currently color curing Bolivian Criollo, Virginia of some kind, Havana 608, a bunch of Macedonian Prilep, and a bit of the Corojo 99.

I'd say half my plants had nice big leaves and about 6 ft tall. The other half was on the shorter side and/or had smaller leaves. Only a few plants blew over and we had over 30 mph winds a couple days or nights.
