I realized I had most of the components to approximate WLT’s Oscuro y Rico blend, so I gave the below a shot and it pretty much hit the spot for me.

Filler: 1 Pennsylvania Broadleaf (PABL) seco, 1 Nic Esteli viso, 1 Nic Orinoco. Orinoco binder, Ecuador Dark wrapper. 50 ring gauge. I hit that mellow/mild experience I've been looking for, perhaps due mostly to the wrapper (the Ecuador Los Rios may be a bit spicier than I realize, or at least letting the spice of the filler shine through more). This cigar is definitely still “stout” (like WLT says of the blend), but chocolatey and bready and immanently smokable. This was probably also the best constructed cigar I've made, from aesthetics to the smoking experience. I even had to let it go out and came back to it a couple of hours later…as if I hadn't missed a beat, still tasted and smoked fantastic. This might be one I can knock out a consistent set of to take and share with the guys.

Looking great there brother on the rolling! I was catching up on your posts and was thinking to myself as well that the EC Los Rios wrapper may be a contributor to that spiciness. Personally love the wrapper to work with the right filler/ binder combos. You may also like the EC Maduro wrapper from WLT if you’re digging the EC Dark wrapper. I feel like the Maduro blends easily with so much leaf. Love seeing your combos also! Keep it up Andude!

Thanks FrostD! Yeah I LOVE the Maduro but am out :( I got the Los Rios frankly because it was low stock but at that price point and how often (infrequently) I can invest in wrapper, I should have just restocked the Maduro. I'm learning that the leaf they have today (at least at WLT) they may not have tomorrow, but I should only approach that thinking with fillers because the wrappers are so expensive. But either way it's all fun and even a mediocre home-rolled is still great and learn a lot off of.

That is true of everything having to do with agriculture of any kind. Most commercial cigar factories will purchase up to a 3 year supply of any particular leaf, all from a single source and season. After that is exhausted, they invent a new name for a "new" cigar.

I am new to the FTT Forum and fairly new to rolling my own cigars, I have rolled approximately 250'ishIMG_1031.jpeg so far, but here are a few of my first sticks. These leaves were all from WLT with: Ec. Maduro wrapper, Ec. Dark binder, and Nic. Esteli - Ligero,Viso,&Seco filler. This blend worked great for my first one hundred or so, robusto'ish stogies. I am branching out though, and would like to get some of yalls input on what other blends will make really good maduro cigars. I am a huge fan of strong cigars w/good flavor & good aroma.

Thanks in advance!

Well done those look great and sounds like a great blend! If only I had my hands on all that Esteli leaf I'd try it out! I'm also on the lookout for good blend info, and will post here as I learn more.

Been wanting to try some short (~4") 60 rg scrap-fill sticks, and knocked out three today. They have a seem of Ec Maduro wrapper scrap in the middle, with the Ec Los Rios wrapper on the outside. Tried one as my first torpedo, and the other two as a poor man's box pressed (or shall we say, book pressed!)

Pretty happy with this blend. Some good spice but plenty of character to keep things interesting, but definitely not overwhelming or one-sided.
50 rg., filler: 1 PABL seco, 1 Dom O'lor Seco, 1 Piloto seco, 1 Criollo 98 Seco. Double Nicaraguan Orinoco binder, Ecuadorian Los Rios wrapper.

Here are some of my latest Ec.&Nic. maduro/robusto/sticks. They have been in the humidor for about 2 weeks now while I wait on new batch of WLT. I am still working on my flag&cap skills(really all my cigar rolling skills), but believe I have a great makeshift cap cutter now that I'm using. It's an old Vintage Macanudo Maduro ring lol. One of these sticks has a lil wrapper tear near the foot, but I used an Ec.Dark binder on these so believe she will smoke just fine. I'm really liking the Ec. Maduro Wrapper too can't wait to try out some Habano Oscuro!

@Hutchmo those look great and I bet they taste even better! I'm curious about the feet -- how did you cut/trim them?

@Andude thanks man! I still haven’t tried them yet, but they have same blend as all my others so far(be happy to share the blend ratio if ya want).
The foot: I just use a round-blade set of scissors/clippers, at an angle, to trim off the corner of wrapper/binder where I have cut the foot off at length. I know they kinda look funny like that, but exposing a little bit of the filler hasn’t hurt at all and seems to help speed up the process of drying out after rolling(I use a lil higher case than most with my filler leaf).
Thanks again!!

Hutchmo, thanks! That's not a bad technique, kind of like a reverse shaggy foot. I may try it, I struggle when I roll 60s cause my cutter is only 50rg.

Just got back from a work trip up to Rhode Island & South Eastern Massachusetts. Had these babies waiting in the triangle press. I received a couple boxes/presses/molds of the Alec Bradley Trilogy cigar. Tried a new blend, but realized I failed to read the leaf varieties and put 2 varieties of Dom. Corojo, when I intended 1 Dom. Corojo and Nicaraguan Condega. Hopefully they turn into a happy little mistake. Lol!

Wrappers:
-Dominican Corojo
-Nicaraguan CT Shade
-Nicaraguan Criollo ‘98

Binder:
-Honduran

Filler:
-Dominican CV Corojo Ligero & Viso
-Dominican Corojo ‘99 Ligero & Viso
-Nicaraguan Orinoco
-Nicaraguan Estelí Seco
