Hello, newb here. My question is thus: it possible to grow a second crop after the first if you live in the subtropics or tropics? I tried using the search feature but couldnt find a thread on this.

I ask because I live in south Texas, grew N. rustica this spring and I have started a second tray of seedlings, this time of N. tabacum varietals. Since the summer is so long here (we generally do not get another freeze until January) I am interested in running a second crop.

Am I way off? Does anyone in the tropics have multiple crops of tobacco like with corn?

Any thoughts welcome.

Nicotiana tabacum is a sub-tropical perennial. In Cuba, the main tobacco crop doesn't go out to the field until autumn. You should be able to get at least two separate crops per year. With such a long growing season, reasonable questions you will need to answer are:
  1. is the average weather pattern suitable in your area for growing tobacco in the late summer and early fall?
  2. what will your curing conditions be at the time you harvest?

I'm in North Texas and I've successfully grown two separate crops in a year. Letting your stubs sucker is much faster though, I could see getting 3 harvests if timed right.
