My porch corner Havana 322 (NP) just failed the hummingbird test. A hummingbird hovered about 6 inches from the blossoms for about 1 second, then flew away. It may be that their color is not pink enough. Perhaps it was the time of day (~10 am)—too early in the day for nectar.

After spraying BT on August 3, I ceased spraying. I have seen no sign of hornworms or hornworm eggs since that date—until just now. The last spraying would have been effective for about a week, so there was an effective BT gap of two weeks.

This afternoon I removed 2 tiny hornworms and over a dozen hornworm eggs from my porch corner Prilep 66-9/7. I inspected the upper and lower surfaces of all the leaves of the remaining, standing tobacco, and found no other hornworms or eggs. So it was just that tempting Prilep plant. After checking for no rain in today's cloudy forecast, I sprayed each of the plants with BT. That was about 10 minutes ago. As I type this post, moderate rain is pouring down.

EDIT: The very same weather forecast website is now retroactively saying "few showers".

Twice today, a hummingbird visited my porch-corner Havana 322 (NP), and sipped blossom nectar. Both times were in late morning, while the sun still directly shined on the blossoms. Prior to finally seeing a hummingbird at that plant, I was contemplating topping it, in order to accelerate leaf maturation. At this point (27 August), not even the bottom leaves are showing any sign of maturation. I'll leave the plant un-topped for now. The adjacent Prilep 66-9/7 has yet to form a bud head.

My overnight temp dipped to 44°F, and will likely do the same tonight. Hopefully, the subsequent warm-up will move maturation along.

Eye-witnessed Leaf Damage

Garden20250904_7662_Havana322_porchCorner_rainDamage_700.jpg

A little over a week ago, I was sitting on my front porch, watching as a rainstorm swept overhead. I eventually had to retreat indoors, to avoid getting soaked. But while I was still sitting there during the heavy rain, a strong wind arose. The wind diverted the rain pouring off the porch roof from the rain gutter to the very corner of the roof. Specifically, a strong stream of heavy rain pounded a single leaf of my porch-corner Havana 322 (NP), but did not appear to be damaging the leaf at the time.

Yesterday, I noticed the necrotic spots on the portion of the leaf that had been bombarded by forceful rain run-off. My best guess is that the rain had bruised that one leaf, and only a portion of it. While that may have led to subsequent intrusion by some pathogen, my conclusion is that it is primarily physical trauma that did this. No other leaves on this plant or the adjacent Prilep appear to have been affected.

This is the last man standing in my garden bed. The top leaves need at least a few more days to be ready to stalk-cut. The weather nowcast says I'll be getting 0.12 inches of rain this afternoon... No, wait. They've just increased that to 0.6 inches of rain this... Oops, sorry. It will actually be 1.25 inches falling in a two hour period. Nope. Now (as I type this) it will be 1.00 inch. Really.

FTT Forum members around the world are surely wondering how much rain Bob received today. The promised rain never arrived. By 5 pm EDT, the forecast was for zero rain. Then it sprinkled briefly at 5:10. Not enough to moisten the soil.

Bob

EDIT: I guess that the problem is not the weather forecasts. They are what they are. The problem is that I make decisions based on them. Mea culpa.

With supposedly one month before "first frost", today, I finally topped my porch-corner Havana 322 (NP). Most of the lower leaves are clearly ripening, and the upper leaves are showing signs of maturation. If the weather holds, then I'll likely stalk-cut it in 2 or 3 weeks.

Yesterday, the porch-corner Prilep 66-9/7 opened its first blossom. I may be stalk-curing that one in my enclosed, back porch. The volunteer (likely) L'Assomption 201 has yet to show even the earliest indication of blossoming.

I finally stalk-harvested the lovely Havana 322 (NP) that has graced my porch corner bed this summer.

Although it is the only green plant hanging in the shed now, I'm expecting rain over the next few days. So it should have enough time to wilt, and begin to color-cure. Temps should be alright for the next few weeks.

Below is all of the leaf from my three Prilep 66-9/7 plants that grew in the garden bed. I would guess that the leaf totals maybe 1/4 to 3/8 pound dry weight.

I still have the porch corner Prilep 66-9/7 in full blossom. We'll see if it can be sun-cured after I stalk-cut it in about a week from now.

Bob

EDIT: I nearly forgot about my volunteer (?L'Assomption 201?) plant on the other side of the porch steps. Although it looks wonderful, it shows no sign of forming a blossom head. It will be a race against the calendar and the weather.
