Hey y'all Been a long time. I ve been off hibernating and working and letting tobacco age naturally ( kiln was using too much power for my scrooge self)
I wasnt planning on growing any this year but been reading up on peoples blogs and, well, You guys know how it goes.....
So I am planning it out now. Should be ok as I am still in the wet and wild spring weather we have only just started hitting double digits outside so i reckon i have pleanty of timeHave to have a nose through my seeds and see what I can grow, Not going to be heaps..... yeah right! no seriously I have lost a lot of section due to the landlord subdividing , So I am thinking of pots maybe six to ten in pots and go from there.

I did a few pots this year just to have some at the house to mess with. With the awful weather we had, the ones in pots turned out to be my prettiest plants.

This season, I have just over 100 planted out in the garden and doing well except for wind damage.

I planted 3 into 20 litre pails and they are over a foot high and doing much better in comparison.

When watering the plants in the pails, I put the containers in my pond for an hour at least as pot growing requires more attention to watering.

Still fairly cool down your way Seanz but growing in containers can be an advantage at times.

I'll let ya in on a fairly well kept secret its not that bad down here we tend not to make a big deal of it otherwise house prices would shoot through the roof lol. Yeah we slowly creeping up the temperature scale. Been looking in my seed collection and are thinking of a small grow maybe six of each of these varieties

NB11, I am liking this tobacco
And some havanna just for kicks,

You're fortunate to have a selection of seeds. Good on ya.

My 3 plants in pails have survived very well as I have often been moving them about recently mainly for protection. I am amazed how well they are doing to date.

Do you know if NB11 is a formal varietal name, or a name created by Jack in NB?

Jack lost the varietal name, but suggested it grew rather well in northern climates, so I encouraged him to name it "NB11" (New Brunswick 2011)

But I haven't a clue as to NB11's andicedents.

That plant surfaced from 5 packages of seed sent to me by Smoking USA in '08 or '09 - along with nearly 20 other distinctly different plants. It was - and still is - by far my best producer. Strong vigorous plants, large leaves, nice mild flavour. Green stem and rib, 15 - 18 leaves per stalk.

The plant is remarkably similar in form and growth habit to the Monte Calme Brun received from JBD ('12 planting) and Bob ('13). The NB11 is a week or so later than the MCB in setting and ripening seed. Don't know about flavour - haven't tried the leaf from JBD's seed yet. And the MCB from Bob is still aging.

There may be a bit of difference between the JBD MCB and Bob's - the plants from Bob's seed were 5 - 10% smaller than the JBD seed. But this may be due to the fact that the JBD seed was on it's second year here, and the plants had adapted a bit to my climate and growing techniques. Could this be a possibility?

A "Monte Calme Brun" received from Alex in Wales in '08 had a most desirable flavor, but I lost the seed from my one surviving plant from him. The NB11 is quite different from that plant's flavour.

Don (Fmgrowit) found a picture of the NB11 (my ID label "G" at the time) that I had posted on the HTGT site some time ago. I don't know where it is! Perhaps you can recapture it, Don!

On its own. The main reason I am growing it again is it handles my climate real

So no cigar smell. .taste to you sean?I suppose growth and form is totally different to taste and smell

No I dont get a cigar smell from it I find it quite a mild peppery favour but that could be conditions Or my aging

I wouldn't say so for the NB11 - my feeling is that it doesn't have enough "personality" to add anything to a cigar. Its claim to fame in my patch is the high yield and strong plants - I've never had one blow sideways in a storm.

And I haven't had enough experience with the MCB yet - just waiting.... and hoping it lives up to the earlier attempt!

No name; no personality. A nebbish. But high yielding and a sturdy grower. Sounds like a good candidate for grow-outs by a few members, to find out if it's a man or a muppet.
