Over here in Sweden we can buy something called a snus kit , consisting of the of all the necessities you need to make a batch or 2 of snus.
There is ( as always ) an array of companies selling these kits , a average price for a kit of 2.2 pounds or 1 kilo of tobaccoflour , salt and sodium carbonate is around 40-45 US.
These kit's is noting new on the Swedish snus scene at all , we've had them for a pretty long time. ( 15-20 years )
Is this something one could find over in the States or any other country for that matter ?

We might see Wholeleaftobacco Snus Kit's next year in different varieties ?
WLT's Virginia Red Leaf Snus Kit and so on , he would beat the chit out of our snuskits 'cause he's got the real thing in his baccy.
I don't think our's have that.
We are a member of the EU and have been so for 20 years now , the EU subsidize tobaccofarmers within the union with some pretty big bucks every year , 1,5 Billion USD.
I've aksed myself the question : Where does this tobacco end up ?
Could it be that Swedish companies buy this bacca for a very good price ( to them) and make snuskits outof them ?
Might even be so that Swedish Match buys this so called tobacco and use it in their products ?
They sure couldn't buy bacca cheaper any other place , since it's already been paid for once , by the EU........( taxpayers money )
Buisness as usual

Back in the old days ( 1700 's or there about ) and before Ljunglöf's Ettan they didn't heattreat the snus.
They would dip the baccaleaves in different kinds of sauces and let them drain off , then pack'em into linnencloth and tighten the cloth with a rope/string.
After re-packing the bundles of baccy pretty often they would have a ''ready'' product after 6-12 month's.
Most probably they would have to compensate a poor product with some kind of aroma and spices like tonkabeans for one thing , muskoil another outof many kinds.
Today we heattreat the baccy to make it mature in a fast way.
Here these companies '' recommend'' you to add some sort of flavor to make it taste like bergamott , cinnamon and so on and make even more cash from you.
When making snus according to their recipe you only need to heattreat the flour 36 hours in the owen at 194 F to have a ready product.
They use sodium carbonate in the heatprocess for the last 12 hours of its course , one of'em tell you to use as much as 100 grams ( 3.5 oz ) to 1 kg or 2.2 Ibs
Wonder what happens to that gum ?

PO.. Have you tried one of these kits?
This is the way I was making my snus. 24 hours at 85C then add Potassium Carbonate and give it another 12 hours. I was using the superior "Baccyman-Ran" tobacco leaf though...:)

Now I'm stuck here with my 100 C for a week and I'm never going to change this recipe due to the very good outcome of the result.
That'll go any snus I will make , makes me have the real taste or aroma from the tobacco and I guess it can't get any better than that ?

WOW PO, The box on the left looks like an MRE, and the one on the right looks like a worm farm to start. I like the idea. Never heard of it at all. Hum? I was raised on snuff and bull durum tobacco.Sweet Garret was a hit as well as WB cut. I like them all.
I would like to try a hit at one of them. Don't have them here or anywhere that I have heard of? COOL!

Hmmm, didn't know much about it either. I'm sure there are buyers in the US for this type of tobacco, just don't know the percentage. Wiki had an interesting article on this, doesn't look like it would be too hard to have a kit like this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus

Na, you're right Dave , there's nothing really to it.
I suspect the tobacco here to be more or less just crap from Southern Europe , which the swedish companies buys for just a pittance. ( 10 bucks ? ) or less
You can easy peasy japanesy make your own kit , grind u'r bacca , buy the salt+potash or sodium carbonate and get hold of a batch that you mind find in your own kitchen.
These here batches is the same one's they use over here to store sweets and candystuff in.

I think the problem a lot of people here in the States would have is getting their wives to allow them to use the oven for a week...

Not here. That's where I hide the wife's Christmas presents.
You both crack Me up! I seen the over flow of PO's snuss. I think He can make a killing on it here. The real PO snuss kit. The grinder thing will be in the history book when it is running PO. How did You like the plastic hose trick I use? Say PO, BrownThumb got Himself a turkey roaster for 20 bucks. Would that work for snuss as well? I have a comercial one here that is used one time a year. I hate to see things We have never get used.

I think you should go with the owen or the pressurecooker.
If your Mrs allows you to use the owen it takes a week , with the pressurecooker 8-10 hours according to reference.
Would like to try the PC but trying to lay low on expenses since I don't work and have no Income what so ever.
Meant to say ; I don't have any job , used to work as a plumber , both for companies and city counsil.

It was just a thought, I have two PC's and use them all the time. I use the stove for Cavendish and got that idea from BT so I don't get into Lindas way at the cooks area. My snuff is prety good. Makes You spit alot.

How do you make your own snus ?
You should be able to make it very good.
Will try and make out of WLT's Cigarvarieties this summer or fall , to see if the taste of it is good.I'll be an experience richer too.
Piloto Cubano Viso and Mata Fina Filler (upper stalk position) is up next after tryin the Flue Cured Virginia Red Leaf in a few weeks.
After changing my way of making my own I have it in for 2-4 hours at the time , and I don't spit alot , depends on what I doin.....

As I see it , even Swedish Match products , which I have used extensivley during a long long time , is just a load of chit compared to what it used to be ( before 1997).
1997 , in the summer , all things that was good with their snusproducts , completely vanished , left was just a product that had no taste or aroma whatsoever.
So , for 17 years its been pointless using their snus , according to myself .
Next year the goverment is going to raise the tax on snus by 22.2 % , a box of loose snus will cost you 8.50 bukks , for a box of trash.
You could just as well go and buy yourself a sack of pottingsoil and use that as snus instead , same taste but to a much better price.
45 gallons for 15 bucks.
The goverment says they're raising the tax due to health issues.........................they need the cash

Befor I start, I put 3-4 quart distiled water in the PC. I add 5-6 tabelspoons of black strap,1/4 teaspoons Glycerin, Two teaspoons Sodium nitrate, one teaspoon of mortons curring salt and 1/4 teaspoon of winter green from the candy shop. De stem the leaf and throw it in. The pc will be 3/4 full when lid goes on. 2hrs. cool open and adjust water so it wont scorch. Do that 4 times. I will do a spearmint to see how that is. I just put it in a jar and on the shelf it goes. wont mold .PS: Then when cool, it goes to the meat grinder.
