Are seeds that result in low nornicotine patented?
What cultivars are low?
What cultivars are low?
Thanks very mcch. They also have a couple of doubled-haploid strains. You can check the available data in the GRIN database: http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/obvalue.pl?81049

Why the interest in nornicotine?
Randy B
Lowering nornicotine levels in tobacco is desirable because this alkaloid serves as a precursor to the well documented carcinogen N’-nitrosonornicotine. Keeping nornicotine levels low has been a chronic problem in Burley tobaccos because of an unstable mutation in these varieties that gives rise to progeny producing high levels of this secondary alkaloid. Nornicotine is an intersting subject. It does indeed seem to be carcinogenic. Flue curing seems to yield higher levels than air curing. I personally want nornicotine in my tobacco. It is without doubt the substance in tobacco that greatly reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease ( there's real good science to back this up) and probably the substance that reduces Parkinson's. It is also one of the most powerful anelgesics ever discovered. Like everything in life, its a give and take. There are a lot of things that cause cancer and a lot of things that prevent it (Vitamin C, Curcumin ,Green tea etc) There are very few things that can reduce Alzheimers, fish oil being about the only thing. I feel confident that I will not get cancer because of the diet I eat and supplements I take, but Alzheimer's scares the hell out of me. Also, it goes without saying that the dose determines the poison. Most anti-smokers that like to tout the increase in certain diseases with tobacco always use people that smoke 1 or more packs a day. Moderate smoking just like moderate consumption of red wine is healthy!
Randy.. one of these day I'm gonna do more research on to nornicotine.
Thanks, that link is useful. As it stands, I am not prepared to start growing yet, so I'm not sure I have any business requesting seeds.
I'm a vaper, and I've found that infusing pure nicotine does not provide the relaxation I am looking for in my vapor. I was able to pull the minor alkaloids from some heirloom tobacco, and it was worlds away from the nicotine-infused flavored stuff that's out there for vapers; it knocked my socks off, and was great without any added flavor... it gave me that morning buzz "ahh" sensation (i.e. full-on satiation).
Anywho, as a few forum users have repeatedly pointed out, these minor alkaloids have incredible potential, and there is scientific evidence to back it up. It's the relaxation and full-lung feel that I'm looking to recapture, in the form of a liquid. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10460322 , which measures the relative acute & chronic hyperactive/hypoactive effects of nicotine and nornicotine, and concludes that "nornicotine likely contributes to the neuropharmacological effects of nicotine and tobacco use".
In the past we have warned ppl. about consentratein nic. Be careful that the best buzz ant you last.
Also easily absorbed through the skin. Please be careful and wear gloves.
Please be cautious with this line of experimentation. I have few fears for you but there will be inexperienced and incautious folks who will read this. Having you or anyone else end up dead as a result of this procedure is a definite NO-NO..Yes And Yes.
Safety is a priority for sure. While the research is exciting, I don't wish to sensationalize it - I want to utilize it.
