Got the germination set-up ready to go today. I'm using a portable, temporary 5 shelf greenhouse in my basement. I'll use a heat mat for germination and will switch to lights when I pot the sprouts.

I'll be growing the following varieties:
CT Broadleaf
PA Broadleaf
FL Sumatra
Vuelto Abajo
Yellow Twist Bud
Bafra
Samsun 15

All except the FL Sumatra will be sun-grown. All will be primed at harvest. I'm getting an early start and hope to set to the garden at the earliest possible date. I want to harvest the cigar tobacco as early as possible and attempt pilone fermentation for the majority of my cigar leaf.

Re: Ashauler 2013

sounds like a good mix,

im slowlly but surelly, learning , by reading you professional cigar maker's post's,

about the importance of certain leaf's, as to where, it will be placed, in the making of the cigar,

with this selection of bacca's you have here,

what type of cigar are you trying to achieve for your final product???

maduro. e.t.c. [ i dont know the different names of the cigars ]

good luck to you buddy, i'll be watching,

Good looking, manageable list. Are you searching for that "64 Padron? If you hit it, don't forget to share the recipe. :)

Re: Ashauler 2013

Yep, the Padron 64 is my holy grail flavor profile...lol.

I'm shooting for both a straight sun grown finished and maduro wrapper in both the ct and pa broadleaf and shade grown lightly fermented fl wrapper. I'm hoping to achieve all without the use of a kiln, but have one as a fall back plan. I may be missing some spice (peppery) tobacco for filler, we'll see.

Bursa, Silver River and BSS-Maden have a spicy flavor to me. Too spicy for a cigarette, great in a pipe, but I haven't tried any of them in a cigar.

Ottoman can real nice too! In a cigarette, use a smaller amount, until you can just taste it. Then you can add Maryland, Dark air-cured and Burley to take the "lite beer" blandness off it. I treat the flue cured as just a base material for making cigarettes.

Re: Ashauler 2013

I'm experiencing germination issues with most of my varieties. I'm working with seed obtained from GRIN it 2010.....and who knows how old it was when I received it. Anyway, I've managed to get the Vuelta Abajo, Frog Eye, and Florida Sumatra to show sprouts. The VA began popping within 72 hours.....the other two both at 14 days.

Vuelta Abajo has been separated into their large peat pots. 18 plants; shooting for 15 in the field.

Germination chamber (that sure sounds technical) photo's at 16 days from starting sorry for the poor quality:

From left to right:
PA Broadleaf = 0 sprouts
FL. Sumatra = 4-5 sprouts
Frog Eye = 4-5 sprouts
HAV 142 = 0 sprouts

Re: Ashauler 2013

Progress so far. I've had a difficult year with germination, got some different seed, had some success, then murdered them with a too strong solution of hydrogen peroxide to combat some mold. Over-reaction on my part, lesson learned. I've reduced my grow list and will simply attempt to salvage seeds from the one or two specimens of some varieties that I've managed to keep going. I should still be able to salvage a large enough harvest to accomplish my goals. I'll supplement with some tobacco purchased from WLT though.

A lonely Bafra in the clay pot....kept company with a Walker Broadleaf directly behind it:

I found a huge bag of seed that in my wisdom I have marked as Rustica...3 pots in the front; a stunted Vuelta Abajo I moved to get more light; Walker Broadleaf
