What are Burley Red Tips and how do I produce them? I primed my TN90 leaf and have only a few leaves left at the top. I've heard alot of good things about BigBonner's Red Tips and would like to try some of my own. How ripe should they be?

You get them from BigBonner is easier. His burley is so red it made my neck look pale.

Burley red tips are the top two to four leaves at the top of the burley plant .
Burley graded out starts from the bottom with flying's , Lugs and then red tips .
Flying's , some call them mud lugs or sand lugs , Lugs some call them cutters . It is according to where you are from as to what they are called .

Seriously Bonner, I aint never seen tobacco as red as yours. And ready to smoke. I been kilning some, and it just gets better. I think knucklehead ought to try some.
Burley should turn yellow ripe in three weeks .This is my organic crop , note the suckers , no spray .

Man, that's a pretty sight. I'm going to have to order some of those red tips. I bet they're powerful.

It is a heavy producer and I hope it is . It has with stood some of the flooding rain while other types went down the drain .It grows great and matures with a good leaf spread .It has crossed the 42" rows completely
From what I understand it should smoke similar to TN 90 , We will find out .The stem is more green than other burley grown for commercial production . This is my first year of growing this variety and if I grow tobacco next year it will be entirely HB4488 .

Here's my look down a row from about 2 1/2 weeks ago. TN 90 is on the left and KY 17 on the right. Both are yellowed now almost to the top and primed 2/3 up. I spent this afternoon cutting and hanging Harrow Velvet and Golden Burley plants. They are all a beautiful golden yellow, except for the suckers which I pruned out before cutting them.

That's a nice looking plant. Glad to hear the rain didn't drown everything. Do you cut out all the green suckers before hanging them? If I don't they can cause mold.

Yeah they will turn and try to keep growing and even try to flower. I have to cut them out during the late part of the season or they cause me problems every time. The weather turned from summer to fall here right on schedule. I have my green house packed full of strung leaf to color cure it. Had to turn on the heat and fans today in there. No sun to warm it up.

Thanks for the pic of the suckers Big Bonner, now I know what the so called "evil" things look like. My KT 209 has not yet budded, much less flowered yet, so no suckers.

im pretty sure red cured coloring is an indicator of high nornicotine content. you wont see it in low converter varieties.
All this "red tip" talk has caused me to roll a puro of BigBonner red tip burley. No blending, no fancy wrappers. All of the leaf has excellent tensile strength and stretch. Just BB's burley. The wrapper, filler and binder are all a deep red-brown. It's milder than imported ligero and viso. A burley puro has a taste all its own. It burns well, forming a gray-white ash.
