@Hemlock I need to try that fig casing! Let us know how it turned out after a 6 month rest!
Will update for sure @AceFour.

So many variables to find the sweet spot- time, recipe, dosage, tobacco leaf and so on.

Doing the nanoscale with ribbon cut whole leaf seems to be the best way for me to turn around a number of experiments. Directionally I'm thinking the fig syrup can be a full substitute for table sugar often used in casing. I've been using it on virginias with a pleasing taste outcome. Subtle but it's there. From a paper I found, it seems fig syrup is mostly reducing sugars which is a good thing for casing :

I have three blends that are in the process of a double press method. (Press for six months, air for two weeks, press for six more months). They are done airing and are being re-pressed at the moment. The noodle press works great for this as the puck fits perfectly into the 4oz and 8oz jars I have. Three hours in the press with tightness checks then pushed out into the jars that will hold the pressed tobacco tight. After six months, sliced, broken and aired by storing in larger jars that get their lids opened at least once a day and occasionally dumped in a bowl for more exposure. The idea is to let them get some air without drying out. All three blends were of course taste tested during this time. The straight Virginias that were cased with citric acid, and maple syrup were already amazing. The WLT ripe Va and the ’22 bright had a lot to do with it I’m sure. The coffee, chocolate, date syrup cased, made with red tip burley, dark air, and Maryland 609 was a fine blend that showcased the awesome red tip. The third blend was Maryland, ‘22 bright, with a little red tip, cased with licorice root, aniseed tea, and maple syrup. Love this stuff!
Time is up for these blends. I’m calling them 2X02 because I will rub them out and give them a second airing. I will need to change the name of the “chocolate” as the casings are well hidden resulting in an easy to smoke high nic RT Burley taste supported by the DAC with a bit of nuttiness. The anise can be called something else as well although it can still be detected it no longer intrudes on this well balanced moderately high nic blend. It does add a great mouth feel as well. The VA blend is still waiting for a larger jar to become available. I expect it will be a masterpiece. Overall I like the idea of airing and re-pressing which may come in handy for handling pressed blends that need a little more edge taken off.

2XO2 VA has the lightest color of them all and has a fermented raisin smell.View attachment 55220
What's the raisin aroma attributed to? I find it to be a natural tendency for Virginia but may not translate into taste. I've been experimenting with Davana oil, fig and date syrup and get a similar nuance. Perique also nudges the profile a bit.

Palo Santo has an amazing terpene profile that fits well with scenting tobacco. A quick test with staves in a jar of loose tobacco show that these transfer easily. The pieces of wood are inexpensive and sold at health food stores or can be found online. So far the scent is up front yet unobtrusive. Very enjoyable in my opinion. Finding the tobacco to match it best will take some time. Right now I can see it useful in preventing some blends that turn cigarette like from doing so (Virginias can tend to do this ). Since it is simple as adding a few staves to a jar and minimal time with the staves is needed it’s not likely I would create a specific Palo Santo blend but instead toss a couple of bowlfuls worth of a blend into a jar with the wood. Anyone trying this please report!IMG_0276.jpeg

I would guess the scent a byproduct of microbial activity. Pichia anomala was an educated guess that Bob made on that in “Perique”. The bright that I had jarred for twelve years had this scent though not a strong as this 2XO2. This uncased anaerobically stored leaf did have the taste come through and was quite distracting as a lead flavor. It has settled a bit after getting more oxygen but I have used it all as a blending component in which this scent plays a strong supporting role. Davana and fig are on my “to get” list. Meanwhile I am hoping to jear more talk about them.

My version of rum soaked Perique;

“Crowley’s deceit”…

1. soak perique in rum for one week
2. strain liquid from tobacco
3. dry tobacco

tip; use liquid to case a VA

dry, woody, spicy, floral rum notes, slightly alkaline PH

I am inclined to add invert sugar to the rum before soaking for added sweetness.

I will let this one stay in the press for a couple weeks this time and plan to heat in the oven for a stoving effect at the end for a few hours. Updates to follow.
What sort of press do you use for this and how do you lay your leaves? Do you press them just like this?

How did it turn out? Is it on par with Orlike Dark Strong?
Well it turned out well as a blend but then I realized that Orlik DSK is cavendish not fire cured leaf. So expect me to try and do it properly and make cavendish for the blend.

Anyone have easy recommendation on making Cavendish from whole leaf?
