Hello!

I'm pretty new to this exciting world of whole leaf tobacco (made the mistake of going with leafonly before I found out about this forum and wholeleaftobacco) and I have some questions.

is it possible to make cigarette tobacco aromatic like a pipe tobacco? e.g vanilla cavendish
how does one evenly disperse different tobacco leaves in a blend?
what is the recommended humidity level and temperature to store shredded tobacco?
is 1mm a fine enough cut for cigarette tobacco?

Also, after lurking through this forum (I can't be bothered to find the specific threads on the forum right now, its late here) I've come up with a rough draft for a casing/topping (not sure on the terminology) for cigarette tobacco and would greatly appreciate suggestions on it from all of you veterans.

The recipe is:

propylene glycol 1 tsp (5ml)
glycerin 2 tsp (10ml)
honey 3tsp (15ml)
licorice extract 30 drops (1.5ml)
cocoa extract 2.5 tsp (12.5ml)
40 proof alcohol (spiced rum) 1/2 oz (14ml)
vanilla extract 3/4 oz (21mls)

total volume: 79ml

Cheers, eh.

Welcome from me in NZ. Yes you can make your tobacco aromatic. All you have to do is use the right leaves. Don't put too much into casings as you start out on your baccy hobby, that will come later. Make the most of the resources available in the forum. Ask questions, read through any posts that look interesting and enjoy your time here. I make a mild aromatic tobacco with three varieties, Virginia Gold, Yellow Twist bud and Izmir Ozbas. I case with Rum & Honey throw in a little Red Wine for fun and anything else that I feel it needs.
Have fun.

I have never used a casing or topping so I can’t advise you there. My cigarette blend has five varieties with layers of flavor. I don’t find flavorants necessary beyond the blend and one of the reasons I switched to whole leaf was to get away from chemicals and additives. My blend (full flavor+)
45% flue cure Virginia
20% burley
20% maryland
5% dark air
10% oriental (prilep, Katerini, or Izmir Ozbas)

After shredding, I dump my container of shred on a table and shuffle the pile similar to shuffling a deck of cards. Start outside, pile to the top, repeat, roll it over, back to shuffling. The flue cure and the oriental will be of a lighter color than the darker varieties and you can tell that you have an even mix when the lighter colors are all spread out in specks rather than clumps amongst the darker tobaccos.

*what is the recommended humidity level and temperature to store shredded tobacco?

Store in low case. We use the term “case” to describe moisture content by feel. Here is an excellent description of case.

*is 1mm a fine enough cut for cigarette tobacco?

Yes. 1mm is fine enough. How are you currently shredding your leaf? If you don’t already have a shredder I really like skychaser’s method, although I have never tried it personally.
