I am confused as to if Connecticut shade is the same thing that is marketed as just Connecticut seeds, would the shade refer to just the method that is used to grow the specific leaf or is it a variety of Connecticut that was created specifically for growing under shade that is different from the regular version? I even see some Connecticut seed advertised as "colonial tobacco" on some places.

Buy your seed from Northwood Seeds.

Connecticut Shade is a variety (and also has several derived varieties). It was developed specifically for growing beneath shade cloth, and, at least in my attempts, produces rather poor wrapper when sun-grown. CT Shade is primed.

There is also Connecticut Broadleaf, which produces a heavier, darker wrapper leaf. It (and its derived varieties) are sun-grown and stalk-harvested.

I should add that most "filler" varieties can produce some very nice wrapper grade leaf. Florida Sumatra, while developed for shade-growing, produces rather nice wrappers when sun-grown.

Moonlight, Metacomet and Magnolia, all CT Shade derivatives, were not particularly worth the effort (despite their engaging names) when sun-grown.
