Corncob Pipes

A friend of mine told me that corncob pipes require no break-in periods. Also they provide cleaner and cooler smoke than the briar ones. BTW, their prices are very very lower.

I've two briar and two meerschaum pipes, I generally use them depending on type of the tobacco. I'm planning to buy corncob pipes to try different tobaccos (to protect my pipes ) but I'm worried about their inner side, there are a lot of roughness (fibrous juts, etc.) in the bowl. IMO obtaining a cake may take a long time.

Fellas experienced in corncob pipes, there are some questions for you

What is the estimated smoking time to obtain a cake in corncob pipes and do you suggest them ?

I found some in Missouri Meerschaum and there are a lot of Chinese made corncob pipes for sale on online shops.

Bob's condensed corn cob info:

• buy Missouri Meerschaum (full size, not the mini)
• corn cobs taste foul for the first few bowls
• corn cob pipes have a larger smoke hole than briars or meerschaums, so they smoke differently
• the bits tend to be the first thing to go, so buy a few extras
• the bottom eventually burns through
• I have nursed one corn cob since 1971, and still smoke it every week or two. The bottom was patched with a resin epoxy, which has lasted for decades, and the bit has been replaced a few times. I particularly like the way it smokes pure burley.

I smoke a cob regularly and agree with deluxestogie that Missouri Meerschaum is the way to go. If you get the line made with hardwood inserts in the bottom, burn out is less likely to happen. I don't strive to have a cake in any of my cobs, unlike a briar it is more of a char and not necessary to the performance of the pipe imo.

I haven't smoked a corn cob pipe since I was a kid and I made my own to smoke rabbit tobacco out behind the barn. Had I been caught I would have been removed from behind the barn and taken to the woodshed.

Thanks anyway but my rabbits don't smoke. LOL Exactly what is rabbit tobacco anyway? My first smoke was corn silk.

Not of the tobacco family, but a pretty good smoke though a little harsh. Has some good health properties. (Unless you're a kid and get caught smoking it behind the barn)

Holy Cow johnlee-- I found a website that sells rabbit tobacco for $16.00 per ounce. I wonder if Don wants some for his store. I can hook him up easy for half that.

I just ordered a Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe from www.rollyourown.com for $5.00. I also ordered a Dr. Grabow pipe for around $25.00. I'm not a pipe smoker yet but thought it might make a good starter pipe for sampling some tobacco. I also ordered 3.5 ounces of D&R's SJ Rimboche Perique blend because I've been wondering about the taste of Perique. It's a blend of Perique and Virginia flue cure.

Yesterday I looked the site of MM for a corncub pipe, a pipe is about $10 but shipping costs $16.50. Although the total price is lower then the same pipe sold here (that same pipe from MM is about $40 here) I'm a little bit worried about the shipment.

Well if I lived in Turkey and had to spend $30-$40 for a corncob, I would just buy another meerschaum . How much are block meerschaums in Turkey?

You're absolutely right. Meerschaums are between $50-200, except special ones. I just want to try corncob but it's not worth $25. May be I'll make my own corncob, but I need a sample or more detailed pics.

I guess you don't get better prices on meerschaums in Turkey, then. It's pretty much the same here, but I did manage to get a Paycoc one on EBay for $40 including shipping.

It's not hard to make one. As a kid, with my first pen knife, I made them with a hollow cane for a stem. Of course I was smoking corn silk and made myself sick but the pipe worked fine. -- John

If I can find a corn cob, I'll try. BTW, as a kid I tried the corn silk too by rolling it with a newspaper
