I just received my Missouri Meerschaum cob pipe yesterday. It was $5.00 and I ordered it along with some cigarette tubes from http://www.rollyourown.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=225 . They have flat rate shipping. I smoked a bowl of pure Burley through it. The Burley had a bite but the taste wasn't bad at all. I've been breaking in a couple of new brier pipes lately so this last surprised me. The taste of any tobacco through the unfiltered unbroken in briers would gag a maggot. Aftertaste all day long. I don't know if the difference is due to the filter or the cob itself but the difference is remarkable. Due to the experience of breaking in a new brier I have bought my last one. I ordered a meerschaum from ebay for $52.00 incl. shipping. It is plain with no ornamental carving but I'm a simple man anyway. I will post on it when it comes. Coming from Turkey that could be six weeks or so according to the info. However I really love this cob pipe and will stick to them or meershaum from here on out.

I smoke a filterless cob for all my tobacco sampling and the vast majority of my pipe smoking in general. The lack of ghosting issues, and durability of the cob when mistreated, along with the low-cost, make it my preferred style. I have a couple of briar pipes also and use them once in a while.

I'm becoming convinced. I plan on pulling the filter once it's broken it. I thought might help mitigate the nasty taste I was getting while breaking in the brier. If anybody wants to break in my briers I'll send free tobacco.

Magic potion: mix up a thick blend of honey and cream. Use your fingertip to smear the inside of a new pipe bowl, to the level of the tobacco fill. (I usually break in a pipe by starting with 1/4 bowl, then 1/2 bowl,....) Reapply for the first 3 or 4 bowls. This forms a nice char that protects the briar and minimizes the foul taste. This also works with a new corncob.

I read your post on that elsewhere Bob and tried it. It still tasted like the Roman army had marched through my mouth. (After marching through a cow pasture) BTW I notice you didn't volunteer for the free tobacco.
