Geez, two days of pretty much nothing but running to court houses, yes multiple, getting forms and getting them filled out. And we are supposed to plant tomorrow. Today I don't know what is going on it is time to get tobacco ready to go to stagecoach. We have quite a few plants I am happy with even more that are acceptable and a ton of them that are still barely sprouted starts. They are all going to get planted tomorrow and come what may. I am convinced the problem has been fertilizer poisoning.
We started another tray of MCY and will start it in Deluxestogies magical blend of starting medium. Hopefully with the improved starts he demonstrated and MCY being an early maturing variety we can get them planted and grown this season. We will see. We are already late for starting late.

I made a count yesterday and we have lost a total of 413 starts when I had allowed for 190. this means that not only do we have no plants for growing here at home. We do not even have enough plants to fill the field in stagecoach.

We will be picking out 145 plants to keep here at home. a few of every variety that we are growing. And the rest are going into the truck this evening for an early morning start to Stagecoach. We are going to try and plant all of the rest in one day. Keeping them sorted out is starting to be a real pain. We actualy went thorugh and moved living plant into empty cells last night so that we are not hauling a bunch of empty dirt to stagecoach. My daughter refilled 6 packs with Bob's peat mix as we went and they are ready for transplants we had started 4 days ago. So today we not only have to get loaded up but we have to transplant some 400 plus sprouts to cells. I have every epectation that the new starting mix will solve the problems we have been having. I also expect I am going to be very angry when it does. The soil we used was an expensive and aggravating mistake.

As for all the custody stuff going on with my kids. it is a never ending very fast paced story but we are keeping heads above water so far. the TPO my sons ex got was probably rendered useless almost immediately when she contacted him right after it was served. He filed a challenge to it yesterday and the fact she had contacted him almost guarantees it will be terminated. There is also a good chance that along with it there will be a custody order so he will not have to wait for weeks to see his son again. This may have served to speed up the process by weeks.

He filed for several things yesterday including a TPO against his ex for himself and our family. Custody hearing, challenge to the TPO against him. and reported her contact with him. Included in his TPO was a contact he could arrange visitation of his son through. OS far that contact has remained unreachable with her phone now shut off and will not respond to other messages. We are also looking into what we can file against that person for failure to uphold her court ordered obligation. THe attourney we consulted said my son simply needs to mention this to the first judge he sees and she may be found in contempt of court or something like that. It has nwo been 3 days since she was ordered by the court to be the supervisor. Three days to avoid visitation for a 6 week old infant that the father has not seen at all for three weeks was called "Gross negligence" by one of the attorneys. With the trail of behavior my son described the attourneys recommended he presue Primary Custody. This would mean the mother would be paying him child support, and she would be allowed visitation only as the court arranged it. It seems a whole lot easier to me for two adults to just work things out. Neither one of these kids are unreasonable really. The Ex likes to be controlling and manipulating and she made the mistake of using my sons child as a means to do that. it was a straw that broke the camels back and he will not consider for one second leaving her the ability to do it again. She is going to loose big time and I actually feel sorry for her. I am of the firm beliefe that a child needs both a mother and a father i ther life at all times. They each have their part and those parts are not the same. In short we are all working very hard and are getting exhausted by something that makes me very sad to see.

Anyway thanks for a friendly ear all. It helps to just type this stuff out and get my head wrapped around that past 24 hours a bit. Wish Us luck. I doubt I will have time to visit the sight again until tomorrow evening at the earliest. It is 5:30 a.m and when this post is finished I am goign to start transplanting sprouts. I don't expect to finish up today until around 9 tonight. I took the day off work and still don't think I will have enough time to get everything done.

The very best of luck to you. Don't think you'll need much tho. I was in a similar position many years ago. After many delays and a lot of screwing around her actions, similar to what I am reading here, got her heavily penalized in court.

A possibly amusing aside -- We were in court and I was feeling sorry for my ex.
I was about to stand and say something when my atty nailed me in the ribs with her elbow so hard it brought tears to my eyes. In a VERY forceful whisper she said to me "SHUT UP and let me do my job. You can give back whatever you like after the judge rules." Guess what? I shut up.

Just a quick note to say it has been a long day. over 9 hours in Stagecoach but somewhere around 1400 tobacco plants are in the ground. we left with the drip system running and the owner will shut it off after two hours. We came up short abotu 250 plants due to the fertilizer poisoning. I am hope that many fo the sprouts will get roots past the potting soil and make a recovery in the next couple of weeks. We will finish planting this big lot in four weeks. Thanks for all the well wishes. this has been a trying year. I guess we all have them now and then.

Okay I got a big catch up period yesterday and have a few minutes to post an update before I head out for work today.

The good news is that all the hard work is now behind us for a while. We have 336 MCY sprouts in cells now that will need to be planted on the 30th but in comparison that is a relaxing day.

Realistically I don't expect everything we planted last Saturday to survive. Just how bad the losses will be I don't really have any idea. So where put in soil that has ricks just below the surface. Some will have been damaged while being planted. and still others are just barely hanging on as it is. Combine this with a soil with a Ph of 8.2 and I end up with who the hell knows. What is done is done it is up to the plants now.

Just from info from others I am looking at going back in two weeks to check on them and probably fertilize them. if they are not ready in two weeks to be fed it will be done two weeks after that. I will also be watching them for when they need to be topped which I would like to do all in one shot. we will see how well that works.

I expect to start the first harvesting of primed leaves somewhere around the first week of august and need all of it brought in by mid October. This gives me a grand total of 14 weeks from planting out to harvesting. I think I have used up any wiggle room. Not like I had a lot in the first place. for the most part I am delayed only 5 days and it has cut everything that short on me. This has been one of the armest springs Reno has seen in recorded history and still we have had it snow twice since May 15th. The 15th was the date I had tried to set plants last year. We got snow until the first of July.

Well anyway, just under three weeks and we can make a second trip to set more plants.

A big thank you to Bod for the sharing of the miracle grow peat and vermiculite mix. with starts that are only a week and a couple of days old we can all already see a difference. If our results compare to what you experienced this plants could very well catch up and even pass our other plants.

Daniel,
When you get a chance, post the exact ratios of the seedling mix that you used. This issue seems to be the most significant consideration I've encountered this season.

oops sorry about that "Bob". At least I didn't refer to you as "That Guy" I guess.

I mixed roughly 50-50 peat and vermiculite. the measure was by just pouring and guessing. It is the best soil, or medium I suppose you would call it for absorbing the correct amount of moisture. Trays only need water every 2 to 3 days and all sprouts now have at least one set of true leaves showing.
I agree whole heatedly with this being the issue for this season. Anyone can just read my grow log and the final diagnosis being the "Wrong Soil"

I have no hesitation at this point to nominate this mix or some variation of it as "The" mix to start tobacco with. I realize others have what works for them. but if this group ever does develop a This is how to do it sort of tutorial. this mix needs to be in it. I may be realling incorrectly but I consider this the best start to seed I have ever gotten. very consistent development and quick growth. Now if I had only had it 1900 sprouts ago. Actually I fully intended to have it back then. My wife bought the garden soil and I never thought twice to check if it was the right stuff.

This is exactly what the professional tobacco float tray mix is. Depending on the manufacturer it is a combination of peat, vermiculite and sometimes pearlite, with slow release fertilizer added.

I used pure peat and now I am regretting it. It dries out so fast, even with it covered that I have to spray several times a day. Well, that is a lesson learned.

I also used the dump and guess method of measuring, and since I wasn't paying attention to the differences in mixes at that time, I just have a vague recollection of what I did. If I recall correctly, I used about 4 parts of Miracle Gro Peat Mix (the brand is significant), together with 1 part Vermiculite and 1 part Pearlite. I think the crucial element is a sufficient quantity of Miracle Gro Peat Mix, along with a portion of anything that will adequately hold the moisture in. The Miracle Gro Peat Mix contains the slow-release fertilizer.

I ended up settling with a combination of reed peat with pearlite and slow release fert. and canadian peat with vermiculite mixed in for transplants from seed tray which sprouted in the straight reed peat. The reed peat on its own stays to wet if any water is in bottom of watering tray. I just found out there is a miracle grow plant or distribution center about 45 miles from here and a friend of mine has a connection to get as many 50 lb. bags of any type miracle grow as he wants for $4.00 a bag.

Well there is no question our earlier problems where due to the garden soil. The new starts are 2 weeks old and most of them are approx quarter size in diameter. some are a bit behind at nickel size. Not all of our starts get under the lights well because the trays are jsut a bit longer than the rack is deep.

We will be going to Stagecoach this next Saturday and it will be the first I have seen them since planting them. It is hard to not see the tobacco every day and I have the feeling they could be dead and we woudl not hear anything from the Lady watching them. So I really have no idea what to expect. Temperatures have been hitting 100 here the last few days.
