These aren't for transplanting. They are to answer the question, "Is the seed viable?" Four of the varieties are from 2018, or directly from skychaser, so I expect those to be fine. The Little Yellow and Lancaster Seedleaf are from my 2012 grow. That's going on 7 years, though they have been stored cold and quite dry. But still, it's best to know that they are indeed good, before I start my seed later this week.

Stic, thanks for the clarification. I assume you did not shoot the photos.

Bob

No, they're mine alright...I even have a shot of Jupiter and the four Galilean moons...hand held, although, it just looks like a bright blob and four small blobs, unless you know what it is...

Stic, Feel free to start a thread in the General Discussions: Nature and Astronomy, to post and explain your beautiful and impressive photos. @skychaser, who owns Northwood Seeds, is, as you might guess from his user name, an aficionado of astronomy.

LOL...

beautiful photos. Where are they?
I see ...... nothing. ??

Except Bob's photo. Starting seeds on coffee filters is a great idea. Someone mentioned recently that the root hairs don't grow into them like they do paper towels, hence less damage when lifting them out. I'm going to try using those this year.

The Groundhog didn't see his shadow here this morning, so it looks like spring is just around the corner.
Never make plans based on the prognostications of a chubby rodent. February has been one of the coldest and snowiest on record here. We've had 25 inches of snow (so far) with daily highs 15-20f below normal. I was hoping to start up my greenhouse on March 1st and get an early start on a few things. Now I'm just hoping to get a path shoveled out to it and get the door open by then. There is another big snow storm moving across the inland northwest today. So far it is staying just south of me. Looks like Wes may be getting dumped on down his way though. Groundhog Day was the warmest day of the month and it's been all downhill since. heh...stupid rodent...

I think a topic on nature photos by members would be a great idea.

Nice selection of tobacco's. I searched all over the internet for corojo 99 and Piloto cubano tobacco seeds and I could not find those varieties. ( If you have too many that germinate I will take them off your hands :)

Good luck with your grow

Wes,
I had that happen with my wheels while driving on the Interstate through Amarillo, TX, in January of 2001. Pretty wild.

CoachMike, PM @skychaser , who owns Northwood Seeds. He may have some of both available. I believe he grew those during the 2018 season.

I have them both. Our tobacco seeds are $3.50 a pack for 500 seeds plus $3.00 shipping per order. If you want some, send an e-mail to [email protected] with your order, name and shipping address and and we will send you an invoice through PayPal. :)

Here, I'm holding a Ziploc in the sunshine, looking at the contained coffee filter, which has tobacco seed between the two layers of paper. No need to open the bag. At 60 hours, I don't expect much to have changed. At this point, the seeds should begin to swell. Over the next 2 to 8 days, a radicle should emerge.

I'm not counting out percentages. I will just gestalt the answer to the question of whether or not the seed is "good".

All Varieties Looking Promising

Garden20190228_4166_seedGermination_emergence_600.jpg

All six germination tests seem to show at least early radicle emergence. The Lancaster Seedleaf seed is from 2012, and seems to be the most robust. Below is a closeup of the same photo.

Garden20190228_4166_seedGermination_emergence_closeup_474.jpg

2012 Lancaster Seedleaf germination test at 3-1/2 days.

I've set up 6 germination cups with my starting mix. I may or may not attempt to extract germinated seed from the coffee filters, since I have yet to set up my 1020 trays, and both seedling heat mats are currently occupied. I guess it will depend on my level of enthusiasm after lunch.

BOOM! My 2019 Growing Season is Officially Underway

Garden20190228_4168_drying1020trays_400.jpg

My 1020 tray setup consists of 5 layers (from bottom to top):
  • lattice tray (for support while handling)
  • 1020 tray without holes (so I can just dump water into the next tray up)
  • 1020 tray with holes (so excess water drains down)
  • 48-cell inserts (for the actual seedling starting mix)
  • a clear 1020 dome (used for the 1st week or so for humidity control)
Add to that a seedling heat mat. I have two of them. As I transfer seedlings into the cells, the first two trays get a heat mat. The next trays evict the earlier trays from the heat. Since seed transfer often spreads over a couple of weeks, it all works out well.

Another layer that is sometimes required is a small sheet of Agribon AG-15 on top, to screen the direct sun that comes into my wire shelves on the back porch. I've made up Popsicle sticks as labels (1 for every 4 cell pack) with the variety named on both sides. The Agribon is supported either by the clear dome, or by the Popsicle sticks that protrude from the cells.

The cell inserts are virgin. To sanitize the trays, I hose them off, then spray any exposed surfaces with cheap "bathroom" spray from Walmart. It's basically bleach plus a bit of detergent. Then they are well rinsed, and dried.

Garden20190228_4167_6varietiesStarted_500.jpg

I can now say that I started my seed in February. Whew! My seedling mix (same as my starting mix) is:
  • 2/3 MiracleGro Peat Moss
  • 1/6 MiracleGro Perlite
  • 1/6 Vermiculite
I mix it up in a 5 gallon bucket. With its lid on, it lives on my porch.

The starting cups are mostly filled with mix, then 1/4 cup of water is added to each. Seed is lightly sprinkled on top, then it is lightly misted with water, to settle the seed. The lids will stay on until they germinate (on a seedling heat mat), then the lids will be left ajar. The relatively deep jars make maintaining the proper moisture easier than with shallow soil. I just look for residual water at the very bottom. When its nearly gone, I add more, by pouring it down the side of the jar. The initial water is usually enough to take the seeds to the point of being transferred to individual cells.

Five of my varieties are showing green in their coffee filter test germination. The Little Yellow is not as convincing yet. But it's early. I'll worry after another week.

First 1020 Tray Set

After a crummy night's sleep, I woke up at 8:30 am. Ugh! After leg lifts, situps, pushups, curls and presses, I was ready to confront...sprouted seedlings.

Garden20190301_4169_sproutTransfer_onFilter_600.jpg

For this season, I intend to grow 48 Corojo 99 plants, which (with a 25% transplant mortality margin) computes to needing 60 seedlings of that variety. The coffee filter test, when held up to the light, seemed to show a birdsnest of sprouting.

I set up one 1020 tray and filled the cells with seedling mix. Using the tips of two fingers as a pair of dibbles, I put a divot into the center of each of the 48 cells. Each was then lightly misted with water, so transferred seeds would adhear more easily.

Garden20190301_4170_sproutTransfer_onFilter_closeup_600.jpg

I cut open the Corojo 99 Ziplock, cut apart the coffee filter, and peeled the two layers of paper apart. Using my forceps as a fancy toothpick, rather than as forceps, I teased out one sprouted seedling at a time, and transferred it to its own private room in the 1020 motel. After every 8 transfers, I misted those cells once again, to tuck the sprouted seed into bed, and added Popsicle markers to those cells. If more than one seed got transferred, that was okay, since I would just murder the hitchhiker after they grew a bit. [Like well behaved, ground coffee, none of the sprouts penetrated the filter paper.]

Garden20190301_4171_sproutTransfer_inTray_600.jpg

After all the cells had a new resident and one Popsicle stick per 4-pack, I misted once more, then moved the tray to a wire shelf on my enclosed, back porch.

Garden20190301_4172_sproutTransfer_TrayCovered_600.jpg

There, I removed the corner pack, poured water (~2 quarts) into the holey tray, covered it with a clear dome, and draped that with a little sheet of Agribon AG-15.

No seedling heat mat is available at the moment. The only likely consequence of that is somewhat slower growth, depending on ambient temps and direct sunlight.

So, 25% of my transplants have been set up.
