Here in Virginia, late tonight is the moment of our semi-annual Jedi Daylight Shifting Trick (DST). In past years, twice a year, it has taken my body about two weeks to adjust to the sudden change in media programming schedules and store hours. And I have 8 devices that require manual resetting of their displayed time. Mercifully, my phone and my laptop computer just take care of it on their own.

This year, I decided on a new approach. For the past 6 days, I have advanced the timing of pills, meals, bedtime, etc., by 10 minutes each day, while essentially ignoring media programming and retail hours. So tonight, when I go through the annoying process of resetting my various clocks, I will already be on tomorrow's schedule. An important aspect of making this physiologic transition is to allow myself to get not quite enough sleep each of my shifted nights this week.

You'll probably laugh, but I like it when it's summer time (I don't sleep much), but when we get back to "normal" time, in the morning, I have an extra hour for smoking and coffee.

That is actual daylight savings. I haven't even owned a TV for the past 5 years. My only functional radio is the one in the car.

"The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

Add television to that quote for todays world.

In Jefferson's day, "newspapers" had just become a thing, and were notoriously inaccurate, partisan and sensationalistic. He wasn't praising ignorance, but rather commenting on the reliability of the source. And yes, today, most TV programming is notoriously inaccurate, partisan and sensationalistic, consisting of mostly entertainment, sportsutainment and opinion. i.e. a waste of time.

I couldn't agree more with Bob, all he forgot was addutainment about things we don't need or want.

Could also be true in the sense that all the news, even if accurate and unbiased (cough), is ephemeral and nothing but thoughts and ideas which distract from the marvel and wonder of daily life.

I have just moved my germination tray into more direct sunlight. Over the next day or two, I will transfer individual seedlings of all my varieties into their 1020 trays.

Each year, I use the same 1020 trays as the previous year, since they can last for a decade or more. The tray surfaces that come in contact with the roots or the water can carry fungal spores, viruses and bacteria from the previous year. So they need to be sanitized before using them again. The cell inserts can also be used for more than one season, but they have so much surface area to clean and sanitize, and are so flimsy, that I discard them after one season, and use new ones. Besides, the inserts are the least expensive element.

After knocking out any dirt, and plucking away any root fragments, I first spray the trays with an inexpensive kitchen/bathroom sanitizer spray--so long as it contains bleach.

I don't clean the mesh tray that I use beneath each tray assembly. With the unholey tray, I sanitize just the interior, and with the holey trays, both interior and exterior get sprayed. I let this just sit for 30 minutes or so. Then I take them out to the garden hose, and rinse them (and re-rinse them) well.

The spraying took me about 5 minutes, and the rinsing about 10 minutes. Yet this task is inexplicably one that I dread each year.

Bob:

It just took me longer than some to ban the Tube. As I said earlier, "the silence has been deafening." And, having spent more than my share of time around noisy heavy equipment, I don't need the additional noise during what is supposed to quiet time.

Besides, I get a lot more time with my hobbies, which really promotes mental-health type wellness.

I now have 20 Trabzon (for 16 plants to the field) in individual cells. The Trabzon chia pet didn't even notice. Being a clever person, I finally, for the first time, I sat on a chair for this transfer. I set the 1020 tray in my lap, and picked individual seedlings with my bayonet forceps. In the past, I always stood at a counter to do the tedious transfer process. No backache today. Duh!

How many years did it take you to figure that out?

Having suffered from various levels of lower back pain for many years, I'm always looking for an excuse to set down.

This year I have a new magnifying articulated light to help with the transferring. I made it from parts and pieces I acquired at an estate sale for very little $. Not only is it functional, but it is attractive. I'll have to send you a pic next time I get the cameral out.

These wire shelves that I installed below the windows of my enclosed back porch some years ago transformed it into almost a greenhouse.

All the tobacco is set into 1020 trays. I will maintain the chia pet germination cups for at least a few more weeks, in case I need to replace a seedling in a tray.
