Another forum I took part in had a "new members" area. Kind of like the "introduce yourself" section here, except that new members had to reach 5-10 posts (dont remember exactly) before they could post in any other section of the forum. Worked well best I could tell as all spammers were condensed into one area or it was not worth their time to enroll since they could not immediately "blow up" the forum with bs.

That sounds like the ticket. Most spammers harvest forum addresses and then send spam and never complete a requirement like the one you are suggesting

Out of all that garbage, and work for the moderators, probably not one of us even read the junk they were slinging. Not one purchase from it. It's probably a nerd with some hot pockets who got a wedgie from my son or yours in school. Even though he's the only one in on the joke he's loving it.

Done ... I have plenty of email addresses so not that hard. I'm growing to hate google too as they continue their bid for world domination (and use sneaky lawyers to claim that they're not making any money in the UK ... and don't pay any taxes here) - frankly they're all as bad as eachother though! I'm a moderator on other boards and am thinking about banning gmail accounts too!

One quick thought - what about the people who miss this notice period who are genuine? Will they get a chance to change their profiles if they are away from the forum for whatever reason?

I think FM will get a message saying they cant access the forum and they can fix it then.

This weekend, I'll copy the email addresses of real members and and send out a notice. If they miss that notice also, WorkHorse is right, they will receive a notice that they are banned. Most will at least want to know why they're banned, so I'll inform them of the gmail ban then.

Regarding the "ban notice"...please understand this is not my wording. I think the wording rude, but it's a vBulletin auto generated message and I have no access to the settings to edit the wording.

I would like to add to this a tad. Changed my mail yesterday and found my self BANNED! Don't freak out if it happens to you just drop Don an email he'll fix you. For me my reset went to the spam box for my e-mail.
So if Don tells you he'll send and you don't see it check the Spam at your e-mail.

Not to dump cold water on what seems like a good idea (banning Gmail), but I was curious what the market share of Gmail was. If it's lower than the incidence of Gmail spammers, then that would suggest that Gmail itself is the problem. If, instead, the Gmail market share is the same or larger than the percentage of spammers from Gmail, then banning Gmail would reduce spam by simply blocking a large segment of email users.

gigaom.com: 10/31/2012 said:
40.8 percent of online Americans use Yahoo, compared to 36.7% using Gmail and 18.9% using Hotmail

http://gigaom.com/2012/10/31/gmail-finally-beats-hotmail-according-to-third-party-data-chart/

It might be worth looking at the percentage of Yahoo and Hotmail spammers, as well as from Gmail. If the distribution is similar to their respective market shares, then banning Gmail (or any of them) would be similar to banning Fords from all roads to reduce accidents.

There are 175 Yahoo account and at quick glance, the vast majority are real people. Yahoo accounts also carry an extension for country of origin (@yahoo.com vn, @yahoo.com br) so spammers are easy to see and entire extensions can be banned.

There are 141 Hotmail accounts, most of which are spammers.

Banning an specific email services does not prohibit a visitor from viewing the site. It prohibits that email service from registering for a user account. I have access to the verbiage for registering and will edit the language to inform potential new members to use a email account other than Gmail...and probably Hotmail as well.

Yahoo doesn't seem to be a problem...yet

Gmail is gone. More than 10 spammers have registered in the past 24 hours. They have contributed more than 250 posts during this time.

Gmail is banned.

Anybody else catch that second Indians game last night? Wow! what a team. First time I actually sat down and watched an entire baseball game in almost 20 years (I usually listen to baseball). I wasn't disappointed in the least...(I was born in Cleveland)

Oh, we won the first game 19-10

If spam is entirely computer driven/automatic this should work. But doesn't this just give spammers a road map for new ways of entry?

After you change your email address, you will get an email confirmation to verify the change. If you don't click on the clicky thingy and try to log in, you get a "YOU'RE BANNED" message.

I did not send this to you,

Check your spam box, Check your spam box, Check your spam box

I just did -- 3 times.

No spam but knowing my luck I'll get banned anyway. If so, it's been fun guys.

If you get a "You've been banned" message, check your spam box for instructions on what to do.

If you make changes to your account settings and can't get back on the site, Check you're spam box for an email from FTT and follow the instructions.

Sure has been quiet around here.

Banning spammers somehow gave me a strange sense of purpose.

Isn't funny how you never miss something until it's gone?

Where all my spammers at?
