First time grower here and finally I had the time (and remembered) to introduce myself. Soon-to-be 47-year-old guy (but not yet, only after today). I live in South-East Finland, at about 61°N.

My journey with growing tobacco started – how else, being in Finland – in the sauna. Last winter, I was ice-swimming and having a sauna with a friend, and we ended up wondering how difficult it would be to grow your own tobacco. Of course, I had to try. I am also into woodworking and have been carving pipes, so if you carve your own pipes, you definitely have to grow and make your own pipe tobacco.

I am growing Virginia Gold and Burley 21. Sixteen plants in total, in a small (overcrowded) lot in my backyard. When I got my first seeds, I had no idea about the different varieties, so just picked two that sounded somewhat familiar to me :)

I usually get really carried away when I start a new hobby (I just can’t help myself), so I had to build a small kiln/flue curing chamber (as I realized Virginia has to be flue cured).

And it has been fun. Seeing the plants grow and learning how to look after them, fertilizing and all that, figuring out how to build a curing chamber, wondering am I doing everything wrong, trying out making cavendish (got some leaves from a local dude) and currently running my first flue curing batch just to test out how things work. And there seems to be so much more still to come what I can learn!
I have been spending a lot of time here on the FTT forum browsing through a gazillion threads, and it has been more than helpful. Thanks to all who have been writing here.

I’ll add few photos here at the end to make this post visually interesting. :) Pictures of my small curing chamber, pipes I have made, and my plants.

Welcome! You have some excellent skills and look like you are figuring things out just fine. I’m also a first time grower and making all sorts of mistakes but learning along the way.
I got to go to Turku once. Place was amazing. Loved the saunas and jumping into the Baltic. Still love saunas to this day based on that trip.

Thanks Drew! Next time you end up in Finland, make sure to visit my hoods by the Great Lake Saimaa and get a deep dive into the local sauna culture (and the lake). :) And yes, Turku is a great place - I think it was just voted the best summer city in Finland.

Great pipes and kiln setup. Looking forward to seeing your results from curing.
