We’ve been in the premium pipe and cigar business for almost 20 years and we’ve always wanted to hobby farm some tobacco.

We grew a little burley in pots last year and we are hooked. We’re germinating about 1500 plants in 10 varieties this year.

Hopefully we can get some good smokeables!

If you have any advice for growing in northeast Georgia let r rip!

Also interested in purchasing some seedlings if anybody is sellin.

Welcome to the forum. Have a look at the New Growers' FAQ. You may wish to scan through our Index of Key Forum Threads. Both are linked in the menu bar.

Jealous of that plant count...had to scale down a bit this year, but someday....

Plan now for your curing barn, and how you will harvest and hang the stalks or strung leaf. 0.5 to 1.0 square feet of hanging space per plant (per tier).

What varieties are you planning to grow?

We actually have access to a 4000sqft tobacco barn that previously hung stalk cut. We prime ours and string em.

This year we’re germinating c broadleaf, p broadleaf, d olor, Havana 601, piloto Dominicana, Eiroa corojo, st James perique, Virginia rustica, criollo 98, and some corojo I picked up from Leo Reyes in the DR.

I started about 1800 cells and hope to get about 1500 of them to germinate. So far the rustica is the only thing struggling to come through.

I would like to try some black mammoth, Syrian, Balkan, Cameroon, or other African larger leafs. Also looking for suggestions from growers in upstate SC or NE Ga on what’s producing good. Especially cigar wrappers.
